Benefits: (… from Abu Hurayrah from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) who said: “If it were not for Eve, no woman would have ever betrayed her husband.”)

The Shaykh : His saying “If it were not for Eve” contains evidence that the name of Adam’s wife was Eve. As for those who say that it was not intended that her name was Eve, they are speaking out of ignorance. It is established in the Sunnah from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that her name was Eve. But what is the meaning of the hadith, and what is the connection between the betrayal of wives to their husbands and Eve? It is said that Eve was the one who incited Adam to eat from the tree and made it attractive to him, just as Satan made it attractive to them both. The betrayal referred to here is not betrayal through adultery, because that is impossible with the wives of the Prophets or Messengers. This is indicated by the saying of Allah the Exalted:
Allah presents an example of those who disbelieved: the wife of Noah and the wife of Lot. They were under two of Our righteous servants but betrayed them وضرب الله مثلا للذين كفروا امرأة نوح وامرأة لوط كانتا تحت عبدين من عبادنا صالحين فخانتاهما
[At-Tahrim 66:10]
meaning by disbelief, because Allah said, “He gave an example for those who disbelieved,” and the betrayal is not meant to be through adultery, for that is impossible. All the wives of the Prophets are chaste regarding it. Allah the Exalted said:
And good words are for good men, and good men are [an object] of good words الطيبات للطيبين والطيبون للطيبات
[An-Nur 24:26]
As for the Children of Israel, it is said, “If it were not for the Children of Israel, meat would not have become spoiled,” meaning it would not have become foul and changed. This gives us the explanation for mentioning the cause.
