Is the intended meaning of the statement, "So when he covered her, she carried a light burden and passed through it, and when she became heavy, they called upon Allah, their Lord,"

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : There is a question regarding the interpretation of the verse; I do not remember its beginning:
And when he covers her, she carries a light burden and continues therein فَلَمَّا تَغَشَّاهَا حَمَلَتْ حَمْلًا خَفِيفًا فَمَرَّتْ بِهِ
[Al-A'raf 7:189]
.

The Shaykh: Yes.

The questioner :
And when it becomes heavy, they both invoke Allah, their Lord فَلَمَّا أَثْقَلَتْ دَعَوَا اللَّهَ رَبَّهُمَا
[Al-A'raf 7:189]
, this verse is related to the first question. Is the intended meaning in this verse, as narrated in some hadiths, that it refers to Adam and his wife?

The Shaykh : The hadith reported on this matter is a denounced narration, and I had traced it in *Silsilat al-Ahadith al-Da'ifah* (The Chain of Weak Hadiths). The correct interpretation of the verse is that the intended meaning is the descendants of the couple... the descendants of Adam and Eve, not Adam and Eve themselves.

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : Yes, indeed. The hadith referred to is narrated by al-Hasan al-Basri from Samurah ibn Jundub. Al-Hasan al-Basri is known for practicing concealment of defects in chains (tadlis). Therefore, what he narrated from a Companion using the wording "from" (an) without saying "he told me" (hadhdhanani) is from his weak narrations. This is of that nature, because he said "from Samurah, from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)," and mentioned the hadith in which it says: "That they were granted a child, so Iblis came and whispered to Eve to name him 'Abd al-Harith.'"

The questioner : Glory be to Allah, Iblis is al-Harith.

The Shaykh: Yes.

The questioner : Iblis is al-Harith.

The Shaykh : Yes, so she obeyed and named him. Then the verse came, according to the claim of the hadith. However, the hadith is not authentic because it is from the narration of al-Hasan from Samurah. Moreover, it has been established with a stronger chain from al-Hasan al-Basri himself that he interpreted the verse differently from his hadith. According to the correct interpretation, the intended meaning is the descendants of Adam and Eve, not the persons of Adam and Eve themselves.
