The Shaykh’s remarks on his verification and explanation of the hadith: “You are in a time in which whoever leaves one-tenth of what he is commanded to do will perish, and a time will come in which whoever acts upon one-tenth of what he is commanded in it will be saved”

The student : Peace be upon you and Allah's mercy.

The Shaykh : And upon you be peace and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Complete it, complete it, O Abu Faris.
The student : By Allah, I was afraid I would cut off the Shaykh’s hadith!

The Shaykh : Complete it; you did not cut it off and finish! Did you not say the salam?

The questioner : Praise be to Allah. From the effects of the Sunnah, there, may Allah reward them with good.

The Shaykh : What Allah willed. May Allah bless you. Where do you study?

The questioner : They study here in the universities here in Jordan.

The Shaykh : What Allah willed!
The student: Peace be upon you.

The Shaykh : Welcome, and upon you be peace.

The questioner : So we said, do not miss the honor of seeing the Shaykh.

The Shaykh : May Allah reward you.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.

The Shaykh : Welcome.

The questioner : ... My brother Abdullah ibn al-Husayn.

The Shaykh :
You are in a time... أنتم في زمان ...
.
The student : Yes, our Shaykh?
Another student: Yes, yes, yes.

The Shaykh : This topic is in the hadith:
You are in a time أنتم في زمان
.
The student : Yes, yes, let us proceed, please, O Shaykh!

The Shaykh : The topic is in His saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
You are in a time in which whoever leaves one-tenth of what he is commanded to do will perish, and a time will come in which whoever acts upon one-tenth of what he is commanded in it will be saved أنتم في زمان مَن ترك فيه عشر ما أُمِرَ به هَلَكَ ، وسيأتي زمان مَن عمل فيه بعشر ما أمر فيه نجا
, and we mentioned that a time passed for us in which we were unable to say regarding this hadith: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said,” because at that time we had not come across a chain of narration for it that would justify our attributing it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), except for that chain narrated by the Imam al-Tirmidhi in his Sunan. Upon studying it, it became clear to us that it is a weak chain that does not justify attributing the hadith to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) facilitated for us, in our study of the manuscripts of the Zahiriyyah, that I came across another chain for it in some of these manuscripts. After studying it, the strength of this hadith became clear to me, so I changed my previous position regarding it and began to say: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said.” Especially since we find that this hadith applies to a great extent to our present time, in which trials have surrounded us from every side. My research recently reached the point that there is a pointer in this hadith to His saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
He who amongst you sees something abominable should modify it with the help of his hand; and if he has not strength enough to do it, then he should do it with his tongue, and if he has not strength enough to do it, (even) then he should (abhor it) from his heart, and that is the least of faith. مَن رأى منكم منكرًا فليغيِّرْه بيده ، فإن لم يستطع فبلسانه ، فإن لم يستطع فبقلبه ، وذلك أضعف الإيمان
Sahih Muslim 49a
. This hadith clarifies that there is room for the Muslim to fulfill the obligation of enjoining good and forbidding evil. Starting from these levels, one should look at the circumstances in which the Muslim lives, especially the knowledgeable Muslim. If the social situation enables this knowledgeable Muslim to be one who enjoins good and forbids evil at the first level, changing the evil with his hand, then that is what is obligatory upon him, because he has entered into the capacity for which all obligation is tied. From here comes what the brother mentioned earlier regarding some of the Salaf killing the sorcerer, who was not a judge officially tasked with establishing the hudud punishments. Similarly, what we read in the biography of the Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) is that he did some of that, changing the evil with his hand. My answer regarding the first matter is: those rulers or governors under whose banner these scholars lived found support from them and permission to fulfill the obligation of enjoining good and forbidding evil, which is originally tied to the primary, greatest governor. But any governor, especially when the area of the Islamic world expands, cannot undertake enjoining good and forbidding evil in a wide area. Therefore, he appoints deputies and installs governors who carry out the implementation of the Shari'ah rulings on his behalf. But today, unfortunately, barely one of us can enjoin good with words, let alone change the evil with his hand. This, unfortunately, is what the first hadith applies to:
You are in a time... أنتم في زمان ...
and so on. This is what we were addressing, and thus the aforementioned commentary on this hadith concludes, and we will listen to what our brother Abu al-Hasan has reserved for us of beneficial scholarly material, if Allah wills.
The student : May Allah bless you.

The Shaykh : Before starting, where did I give it to you?
The student : Yes, yes.
Another student: He gave me the paper.

The Shaykh : Ah, okay.
The student: Peace be upon you.
Another student: And upon you be peace and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.
The student : Our Shaykh, may you please proceed.

The Shaykh : Please proceed, our brothers.
The student : Please proceed.
