Explanation of the author's statement: "...and covering the mouth and nose..."

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : The author said: "and covering the mouth and nose". Covering the mouth means to cover it in this manner, meaning to place the turban, the ghutrah, or the shemagh over the mouth, and likewise over the nose. This is because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)
that a man should cover his mouth نهى أن يُغطّيَ الرجل فاه
Sunan Abi Dawud 643Hasan (Al-Albani)
. By "his mouth," he means his oral cavity. He prohibited this as well. However, an exception is made if one yawns; if one yawns and covers his mouth to suppress the yawn, there is no harm in that. But without a reason, it is disliked.
Now, if there is a foul smell around him that bothers him during prayer and he needs to cover his mouth, this is permissible and there is no harm in it, because it is for a need. Likewise, if he has a cold and suffers from sensitivity if he does not cover his mouth, this is also a need that permits him to cover his mouth. But without a reason, it is disliked, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited it.
