Explanation of the words of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding what he quoted: "

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave an example to apply this hadith to. He said:
So, whoever migrated for Allah and His Apostle, then his migration will be for Allah and His Apostle, and whoever migrated for worldly benefits or for marrying a woman, then his migration will be for what he migrated for.
Sahih al-Bukhari 2529
: Migration is: “a person moving from the abode of disbelief to the abode of Islam”. For example, a man is in America, and America is an abode of disbelief. He embraces Islam but is unable to manifest his religion there, so he moves from it to the Islamic lands. This is migration. When people migrate, they differ in their migration. Some migrate and leave their land for Allah and His Messenger, meaning for the Shari'ah that Allah legislated through the tongue of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). This is the one who attains good and achieves his objective. For this reason, he said:
then his migration will be for Allah and His Apostle
Sahih al-Bukhari 2529
, meaning: he has achieved what he intended. The second type of migrant migrated for a worldly gain he will obtain, meaning a man who loves to accumulate wealth. He heard that in the land of Islam there is fertile ground for earning money, so he migrated from the land of disbelief to the land of Islam for the sake of money only. He did not intend to straighten his religion, nor did he care about his religion, but his concern was money. Second: a man migrated from the land of disbelief to the land of Islam wanting a woman to marry. It was said to him: We will not marry you to her except in the land of Islam, and you cannot take her to the land of disbelief. So he migrated from his land—the land of disbelief—to the land of Islam in order to marry this woman. So the one seeking the world and the one seeking the woman did not migrate to Allah and His Messenger. For this reason, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
his emigration was for what he emigrated for
Sahih al-Bukhari 1
.
And here he said:
for what he emigrated for
Sahih al-Bukhari 1
, and he did not say: “So his migration is to a worldly gain he will obtain, or a woman he will marry.” Why? It was said: Because of the length of the speech, because if he said: “So his migration is to a worldly gain he will obtain, or a woman he will marry,” the speech would become long. So he said:
his emigration was for what he emigrated for
Sahih al-Bukhari 1
. And it was said: Rather, he did not specify them out of contempt for them, and turning away from mentioning them, because they are lowly, namely: the world and the wife. And the intention of migration, which is among the best of deeds, for the sake of the world and the woman is a low, base intention. He said:
his emigration was for what he emigrated for
Sahih al-Bukhari 1
, so he did not mention it out of contempt. In any case, whether it is this or that or both, there is no doubt that the intention of the one who migrated for the world or the woman he will marry is low, base, and degraded. Unlike the first one who migrated to Allah and His Messenger. Migration has types, and perhaps we will speak about them, if Allah wills, in the next lesson. And success is from Allah.
The reader: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) quoted: “From the Commander of the Faithful, 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say:
Actions are to be judged only by intentions and a man will have only what he intended. When one’s emigration is to Allaah and His Apostle, his emigration is to Allaah and His Apostle but his emigration is to a worldly end at which he aims or to a woman whom he marries , his emigration is to that for which he emigrated.
Sunan Abi Dawud 2201Sahih (Al-Albani)
, agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim”
.

The Shaykh : Good, good.
