Explanation of the words of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding what he quoted: "… and the Last Day …"

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and I send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow them with excellence until the Day of Judgment. As for what follows:
We have previously spoken, as much as was facilitated, about the words of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)
Faith is to believe in Allah, His angels, His Books, His Messengers
Musnad Ahmad 367, 368Lts isnad is Sahih, Muslim (8)
the four pillars
As for the fifth pillar, it is faith in the Last Day—wait a moment… the one behind you—so it is the Last Day, and the Last Day is the Day of Resurrection. It is called that because there is no day after it. It is called the Day of Resurrection the Last Day because there is no day after it.
So a person has four stages: a stage in the womb of his mother, a stage in this world, a stage in the barzakh (the interval between death and resurrection), and the stage of the Day of Resurrection, which is the final stage. For this reason, it is called the Last Day. People will settle there either in Paradise—we ask Allah to make us and you among them—or in the Fire, refuge with Allah from that. This is the ultimate destination. Faith in the Last Day includes, as Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said in the book al-'Aqidah al-Wasitiyyah, which is a concise book on the creed of the people of the Sunnah and the community, and one of the best things Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) wrote in its conciseness, clarity, and lack of extensive digressions. He said (may Allah have mercy on him) "Included in faith in the Last Day is faith in everything the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) informed about that will occur after death". Everything the Prophet (may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him) informed about that will occur after death is included in faith in the Last Day.
Among that is the trial of the grave. When the deceased is buried Two angels came to him, seated him, and asked him, and asked him three questions. They say, "Who is your Lord? What is your religion? Who is your Prophet?" And Allah will make firm those who believe with the firm word. I ask Allah to make us and you among them
The believer will say, “My Lord is Allah, my religion is Islam, and my Prophet is Muhammad.” Then a caller from the sky will call out, “Your servant has spoken the truth! Spread for him from Paradise and dress him from Paradise, and open for him a door to Paradise, and make his grave spacious for him to the extent of his sight. And let him come from Paradise with its spirit, and let him see therein what he sees of bliss.” As for the hypocrite, may Allah protect us from him, or the disbeliever, he will say, “Ah, ah, I do not know. I heard the people saying something, so I said it.”
because the faith did not reach his heart. We ask Allah for well-being. It is only in his tongue. So he hears but does not know the meaning, and it is not opened to him in his grave. This is the trial. This is a very great trial. For this reason, the Prophet (may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him) commanded us to seek refuge with Allah from it in every prayer "I seek refuge with Allah from the punishment of Hell and from the punishment of the grave"
And they believe. Among that also is that you believe in the bliss of the grave and the punishment of the grave. The bliss of the grave is for those who deserve the bliss, the believers, and the punishment of the grave is for those who deserve the punishment. That has come in the Qur'an and the Sunnah, and the people of the Sunnah and the community have agreed upon it. In the Book of Allah, Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) says
Thus does Allah reward the righteous - (32) The ones whom the angels take in death, [being] good and pure; [the angels] will say, "Peace be upon you. Enter Paradise for what you used to do."
[An-Nahl 16:31-32]
Enter Paradise at the time of death for what you used to do. And Allah (Mighty and Majestic) says at the end of Surat al-Waqi'ah
(88) And if the deceased was of those brought near to Allah, (89) Then [for him is] rest and bounty and a garden of pleasure.
[Al-Waqi'ah 56:88-89]
He says this regarding the dying person at his death throes, when death comes. If he is among the near ones, he has a spirit and a fragrance, and a garden of bliss, on that very day. As for the punishment of the grave, listen to His saying (Glorified and Exalted is He)
And if you could but see when the wrongdoers are in the overwhelming pangs of death
[Al-An'am 6:93]
meaning the throes of death
while the angels extend their hands
[Al-An'am 6:93]
Get out, your souls
as if they are stingy with their souls, because it is being announced, refuge with Allah, of the punishment, so it flees in the body, it disperses, and the person is stingy with it. It is said, "Bring out your souls"
Today you will be awarded the punishment of [extreme] humiliation for what you used to say against Allah other than the truth and [that] you were, toward His verses, being arrogant." اليوم تجزون عذاب الهون بما كنتم تقولون على الله غير الحق وكنتم عن آياته تستكبرون
[Al-An'am 6:93]
When is that day? At their death. On the day of their death, you will be recompensed with the punishment of humiliation for what you used to say about Allah other than the truth, and you used to be arrogant about His verses. And Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) said regarding the family of Pharaoh
The Fire, they are exposed to it morning and evening. And the Day the Hour appears [it will be said], "Make the people of Pharaoh enter the severest punishment."
[Ghafir 40:46]
He said
The Fire, they are exposed to it morning and evening.
[Ghafir 40:46]
This is before the Hour stands, and on the Day the Hour stands
Make the people of Pharaoh enter the severest punishment." أدخلوا آل فرعون أشد العذاب
[Ghafir 40:46]
But we must know that this bliss and punishment is a hidden matter that we do not have access to, because if we had access to it, we would not bury our dead. For a person cannot present a corpse to a punishment he hears, causing him to panic. Because the disbeliever or the hypocrite, if he is unable to answer, is struck with a mizrab, a piece of iron like a hammer of iron, so he screams a scream that everything hears except the human being. Everything hears it except the human being. The Prophet (may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him) said
and if they heard it they would fall down unconscious
Sahih al-Bukhari 1380
And he (may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him) said
If it were not that you bury one another, I would have asked Allah to show you the punishment of the grave.
But from the mercy of Allah is that we do not know it by sense. We believe in it as a hidden matter and do not perceive it by sense.
Likewise, if the punishment of the grave were a witnessed matter and perceived by sense, there would be a disgrace. If you passed by the grave of a person and heard him being punished and screaming in it, there would be a disgrace for him.
Thirdly, if it were a witnessed matter perceived by sense, this would be anxiety for his family and relatives. Meaning, they would not sleep at night while they hear their companion screaming night and day from the punishment. But from the mercy of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) is that Allah made it a hidden matter that is not known. So a person does not come and say, "If we dug up the grave after a day or two, we would not find a trace of the punishment." We say this because it is a hidden matter. However, Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) may reveal this hidden matter to whom He wills of His servants. Perhaps He will reveal it. Perhaps He will reveal it.
It has been established in the two Sahihs from the hadith of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him)
That the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by two graves in Medina and said, “Indeed, they are being punished, and they are not being punished for something great. As for one of them, he did not protect himself from the urine, and as for the other, he used to go about spreading tales.”
So Allah revealed to His Prophet about these two graves that they are being punished. So the conclusion is that it is obligatory for us to believe in the trial of the grave, which is the questioning of the two angels of the deceased about his Lord, his religion, and his Prophet. And that we believe in the bliss of the grave or the punishment of the grave. And Allah is the One who grants success.
And I pray and offer peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, the Seal of the Prophets and the Imam of the Pious, and upon his family and his Companions, and those who follow them with excellence until the Day of Judgment. As for what follows:
So our last discussion was on the words of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that you should believe
Faith is to believe in Allah, His angels, His Books, His Messengers, the Last Day
Musnad Ahmad 367, 368Lts isnad is Sahih, Muslim (8)
And we mentioned that Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) stated that included in faith in the Last Day is everything the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) informed about that will occur after death. And we spoke about the trial of the grave, and the punishment of the grave, and the bliss of the grave, and that the punishment or the bliss is established by the apparent Qur'an and the explicit Sunnah, of which there is no doubt.
And among what is included in faith in the Last Day is that a person believes in what will occur on the very day, the Last Day. And that is that when the Trumpet is blown the second blast, the people will rise from their graves to Allah, Lord of the worlds, barefoot, with no sandals on them, naked, with no clothes on them, and uncircumcised, and with their private parts, with no wealth with them. All people, even the prophets and messengers, will be resurrected in this state, as Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) said
As We began the first creation, We will repeat it
[Al-Anbya 21:104]
Just as a person comes out of the womb of his mother in this state, naked, not wearing sandals, not circumcised, with no wealth with him, so he will come out of the belly of the earth on the Day of Resurrection in this state. They will stand for the Lord of the worlds, men and women, young and old, disbelievers and believers, all in this description: barefoot, naked, uncircumcised, with their private parts. And they will not look at one another, because what has befallen them of the matter will occupy them from looking at one another. The matter is greater than for some people to look at others. Perhaps a woman will be next to a man, and he will not look at her, and she will not look at him, as Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) said
(33) But when there comes the Deafening Blast (34) On the Day a man will flee from his brother (35) And his mother and his father (36) And his wife and his children, (37) For every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him.
['Abasa 80:33-37]

And among faith in the Last Day is that you believe that Allah (Mighty and Majestic) will spread out this earth and extend it, as the leather is extended, meaning the skin. Because our earth today is a round sphere, somewhat bulging from the south and the north, but it is round, as indicated by His saying (Glorified and Exalted is He)
(1) When the sky has split [open] (2) And has responded to its Lord and was obligated [to do so] (3) And when the earth has been extended
[Al-Inshiqaq 84:1-3]
When the earth is extended, it means that it will not be extended except when the sky is split, and that is the Day of Resurrection. It will be spread out as tanned leather is spread out, with no valleys, no trees, no buildings, and no mountains. The Lord (Mighty and Majestic) will leave it a flat, level plain, in which you will see no crookedness or depression. The people will be gathered on it in the description we mentioned earlier. And the heavens will be folded up; the Lord (Mighty and Majestic) will fold them with His Right Hand. And the sun will draw near to the creation until it will be above their heads at the distance of a mile, either a distance of a mile or the distance of the kohl stick, and whichever it is, it will be close to the heads.
But we believe that some of the people will be saved from its heat, and they are those whom Allah will shade in His Shade on the Day when there is no shade except His Shade. And among them are the seven whom the Messenger (may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him) mentioned in a single sequence.
