Explanation of the words of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding what he quoted: "

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
We have previously mentioned that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) referred in multiple hadiths to the fact that it is wise for a person to hasten to perform righteous deeds. In this hadith, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) pointed to several things that a person should hasten to address by performing deeds. He said:
Hasten to perform good deeds before seven things
meaning seven things that all encompass a person, and one fears that they may befall him. Poverty: he said:
Are you waiting but for overwhelming poverty, or distracting richness
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2306
A person is in one of two states regarding sustenance. Sometimes Allah the Exalted enriches him and provides him with wealth, sons, family, palaces, vehicles, status, and other matters of wealth. When he sees himself in this state, he becomes arrogant, may Allah protect us from that, and he increases in arrogance, becomes haughty, and looks down upon worshipping Allah, as Allah the Exalted said:
No! [But] indeed, man transgresses
[Al-'Alaq 96:6]
And Allah clarified, saying:
Indeed, the return is to your Lord.
meaning, no matter how much self-sufficiency and elevation you reach, your return is to Allah. We observe that wealth becomes a cause of corruption, may Allah protect us from that. You find a person in his state of poverty humble before Allah, turning to Allah, with a broken spirit, having no arrogance. But when Allah provides him with wealth, he becomes arrogant, may Allah protect us from that, and his wealth makes him arrogant. Or the opposite.
Or
A poverty that causes you to forget
This is an observed reality. Therefore, a person is to be feared from these two states: either wealth that makes one arrogant or poverty that makes one forget. If Allah bestows upon a servant wealth that does not make him arrogant, and poverty that does not make him forget, and his state is moderate, his worship is upright, and his affairs are correct, then this is the happiness of this world. The happiness of this world is not in the abundance of wealth, because it may make one arrogant. Therefore, reflect on the statement of Allah the Exalted:
Whoever does righteousness, whether male or female, while he is a believer - We will surely cause him to live a good life, and We will surely give them their reward [in the Hereafter] according to the best of what they used to do.
[An-Nahl 16:97]
He did not say, “Whoever does a righteous deed, male or female, We will expand for him wealth and give him much wealth.” He said:
We will give him a good life
either by abundance of wealth or by little wealth. It is reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said, in what he narrates from Allah:
Indeed, among My servants is one whom, if I were to enrich him, wealth would corrupt him, and among My servants is one whom, if I were to impoverish him, poverty would corrupt him
And this is the reality of people: for some, poverty is better for them, and for others, wealth is better for them. But the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) warned against wealth that makes one arrogant and poverty that makes one forget.
The third, he said:
Or an illness that corrupts you أو مرضا مفسدا
“an illness that corrupts you.” Illness corrupts a person’s affairs. As long as a person is in good health, you find him with an open chest, a broad mind, and at ease. But when he is struck by illness, he becomes confined, the earth becomes narrow for him, and his concern becomes himself. You find that his illness corrupts many of his affairs; he does not feel at ease with people, nor does he open up to his family because he is sick and weary in his soul. So illness corrupts a person’s affairs. Is a person always in good health? No, a person is not always in good health, and illness awaits him at every moment. How many a person was active and healthy in the morning and became weak and sick in the evening, or the opposite: he was healthy and active in the evening and became sick and weak in the morning. So a person must hasten to address these matters. These are three things we are discussing in this lesson, and the rest, if Allah wills, in the next lesson. And success is from Allah.
The reader: The author (may Allah have mercy on him) quoted: “from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Race to do works against seven. Are you waiting but for overwhelming poverty, or distracting richness, or debilitating illness, or babbling senility, or sudden death, or the Dajjal, so that hidden evil is what is awaited, or the Hour? The Hour is more calamitous and more bitter.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2306
Al-Tirmidhi narrated it and said: ‘A good hadith.’”
