The commentary of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) on what he quoted: "

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: The author (may Allah have mercy on him) quoted: " from Amr ibn Awf al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him):
That the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him) to Bahrain to bring its jizyah, so he came with wealth from Bahrain, and the Ansar heard of Abu Ubaydah's arrival, so they attended the Fajr prayer with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) finished the prayer, he turned toward them, and they presented themselves to him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled when he saw them, then said: I think you heard that Abu Ubaydah has arrived with something from Bahrain? They said: Yes. He said: Rejoice and hope for what pleases you. By Allah, it is not poverty that I fear for you, but I fear that the world will be spread out for you as it was spread out for those before you, so you will compete for it as they competed for it, and it will destroy you as it destroyed them.
, agreed upon.
And from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) who said:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sat on the minbar and we sat around him, and he said: Among the things I fear for you after me is what will be opened to you of the beauty and adornment of the world.
, agreed upon.
And from him (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The world is sweet and green (alluring) and verily Allah is going to install you as vicegerent in it in order to see how you act. So avoid the allurement of women
Sahih Muslim 2742
, narrated by Muslim "

The Shaykh : These hadiths were mentioned by the author (may Allah have mercy on him) in the chapter on asceticism regarding the world and encouragement thereof. He had mentioned before this several verses, all of which indicate that this world is nothing in relation to the Hereafter, and that it is a passage and a farm. If someone asks: It is said wara' (scrupulousness) and it is said zuhd (asceticism), so which is higher and what is the difference between them?
The answer is that zuhd is higher than wara', and the difference between them is that wara' is leaving what is harmful, and zuhd is leaving what is not beneficial. So things are of three categories:
Some are harmful in the Hereafter, some are beneficial, and some are neither harmful nor beneficial.
So wara' is that a person leaves what is harmful to him in the Hereafter, meaning: that he leaves the forbidden.
And zuhd is that he leaves what is not beneficial to him in the Hereafter. So what is not beneficial, he does not take it; what is beneficial, he takes it; and what is harmful, he does not take it, a fortiori.
So zuhd is higher than wara', a higher state than wara'. Every person of zuhd is a person of wara', but not every person of wara' is a person of zuhd. However, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) warned against the world being opened to us so that we perish.
When Abu 'Ubaydah arrived with wealth from Bahrain and the Ansar heard about it, they came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and found him in the Fajr prayer. When he finished the prayer, they approached him, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled.
: "Tibassama" means he smiled but without sound. He smiled because they came eager for the wealth, so he said to them:
Perhaps you have heard of Abu 'Ubaydah's arrival from Bahrain? They said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah.
: meaning we heard about it and came to get our share. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
I am not afraid that you will be poor
Sahih al-Bukhari 4015
: It is not poverty that I fear. Poverty may be better for a person, as came in the Qudsi hadith narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that Allah said:
Indeed, among My servants is one whom, if I were to enrich him, wealth would corrupt him.
,
Indeed, among My servants is one whom, if I were to enrich him, wealth would corrupt him.
: meaning He made him arrogant and misguided and prevented him from the Hereafter, and I seek refuge in Allah, so he became corrupt.
And indeed, among My servants is one whom, if I were to impoverish him, poverty would corrupt him.
.
So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
I am not afraid that you will be poor
Sahih al-Bukhari 4015
: meaning I do not fear poverty for you, because the poor person is generally closer to the truth than the rich person. Look at the messengers (peace and blessings be upon them): who used to lie to them? The elite: the nobles, the rich, and most of those who followed them were the poor, until the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) himself: most of those who followed him were the poor. So poverty is not to be feared. What is to be feared is that the world will be spread out for us, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
I fear that worldly wealth will be bestowed upon you
Sahih al-Bukhari 4015
meaning as it was spread out for those before us.
and it will destroy you just as it destroyed those before you.
: And this is the reality. Look at our condition here, meaning in the Kingdom. When people were closer to poverty, they were more mindful of Allah and more humble and more fearful. And when wealth increased, turning away from the path of Allah increased, and arrogance occurred. Now a person looks at the beauty and adornment of the world: a car, a house, furniture, clothing. He boasts to people with this, and turns away from what benefits him in the Hereafter. And the newspapers and papers and the like do not speak except of luxury and what relates to the world, and they turned away from the Hereafter, and the people became corrupt except whom Allah wills.
So the result is that if the world is opened—may Allah protect us and you from its evil—it is an evil that makes a person arrogant.
No! [But] indeed, man transgresses
[Al-'Alaq 96:6]
, Pharaoh said to his people:
O my people, does not the kingdom of Egypt belong to me, and these rivers flowing beneath me
[Az-Zukhruf 43:51]
: "Shafat" means he boasts with the world. So the world is very dangerous.
And in these hadiths, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also said:
Abu Sa'eed Al-Khudri said: "One day, the Messenger of Allah(s.a.w) led us in Salat Al-Asr while it was still daytime. Then he stood to give us a Khutbah. He did not leave anything that would happen until the Hour of Judgement except that he informed us about it. Whoever remembered it remembered it, and whoever forgot it forgot it. Among what he said was: 'Indeed the world is green and sweet, and indeed Allah has left you to remain to see how you behave. So beware of the world, and beware of the women.' And among what he said was: 'The awe(status) of people should not prevent a man from saying the truth when he knows it."'He(one of the narrators) said: "Abu Sa'eed wept, then he said: 'By Allah! We have seen things and we feared."' "And among what he said in it, was : 'Indeed, for every treacherous person there shall be a banner erected on The Day Of Resurrection in proportion to his treachery. And there is no treachery greater than the treachery of a leader to the masses' whose banner shall be positioned at his buttocks.' And among what we remember from that day is: 'Behold! Indeed the children of Adam were created in various classes. Among them is he who was born a believer, lives as a believer, and dies a believer. Among them, is he who was born a disbeliever, lives as a disbeliever, and dies a disbeliever. Among them, is he who was born a believer, lives as a believer, and dies a disbeliever. Among them, is he who was born a disbeliever, lives as a disbeliever, and dies a believer. Behold! Among them is the slow to get angry, the quick to calm. Among them is the quick anger and the quick to calm, so this is with that. Behold! Among them is the quick get angry and the slow to calm, and indeed the best of them is the slow to get angry and the quick to calm, and the worst of them is the quick get angry and the slow to calm. Behold! Among them is he who pays back well and collects well. Among them is he who is bad with paying back and good when collecting. Among them is he who pays back well and is bad with collecting, so this is with that. Behold! Among them is he who is bad with paying back and bad with collecting. Indeed the best of them is the one who is good in paying back and good in collecting. And the worst of them is the one who is bad with paying back and bad with collecting. Behold! Anger is an ember in the heart of the son of Adam, as you see it in the redness of his eyes and the bulge of his jugular veins. So whoever senses something from that, then let him cling to the ground."' He said: "So we began turning towards the sun to see if anything of it remained(meaning whether it has set or not). So the Messenger of Allah(s.a.w) said: 'Behold! The world, in relation to what has passed of it, shall not remain except as what remains of this day of yours, in relation to what has passed of it."'

: Sweet in taste, green in appearance, it attracts and tempts. A thing that is sweet and has a good appearance tempts a person. So the world is like this: sweet and green, sweet in taste, green in appearance.

.
But if Allah enriches a person, and his wealth becomes an aid for him in the obedience of Allah: he spends his wealth in the truth and in the path of Allah, the world becomes good. For this reason, the man of the world who spends his wealth in the path of Allah and in the pleasure of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) became second to the one to whom Allah granted wisdom and knowledge, and he became teaching people. So there is a difference between the one who is engrossed in the world and turns away from the Hereafter, and the one whom Allah enriches and whose wealth becomes a cause of his happiness and spending in the path of Allah.
Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire." ربنا آتنا في الدنيا حسنة وفي الآخرة حسنة وقنا عذاب النار
