Explanation of the words of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding what he quoted: "

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) said: And from Abu Mas'ud 'Uqbah ibn 'Amr (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: When the verse regarding charity was revealed—meaning the verse that contains the exhortation to charity, meaning the voluntary giving of wealth to the poor seeking the Face of Allah; this is what charity is, that a person voluntarily gives his wealth to the poor seeking the Face of Allah. It is called charity because the giving of wealth to Allah (Mighty and Majestic) is evidence of the truth of faith in Allah, for wealth is among the things loved by souls. Allah the Exalted said:
And you love wealth with immense love. وتحبون المال حبا جما
[Al-Fajr 89:20]
meaning much and great. So if a person gives it seeking the Face of Allah, then the beloved is not given except for what is more beloved than it, and that becomes evidence of the truth of faith. When it was revealed, the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) hastened and rushed to give charity to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). And this was their custom (may Allah be pleased with them): when verses regarding commands were revealed, they hastened to them and complied with them, and when verses regarding prohibitions were revealed, they hastened to leave them. For this reason, when the verse regarding intoxicants was revealed, which contains the prohibition of intoxicants, and it reached a group of the Ansar who had intoxicants in front of them, which they were drinking before it was prohibited, as soon as they heard the news, they abandoned the intoxicants. Then they went out with the vessels and poured it out in the markets until the markets ran with the intoxicants. And this is what is obligatory upon every believer when he is informed of something from Allah and His Messenger: that he hasten to do what is obligatory upon him of complying with this command or avoiding this prohibition. The important point is that the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) began to carry charity, each one carrying according to his ability to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). So a man came with a large amount of charity, and a man came with a small amount of charity. The hypocrites, when the man with the large amount of charity came, said, 'This man is a show-off,' and I seek refuge in Allah, he is showing off to people, he did not intend the Face of Allah. And when the man with the small amount of charity came, they said, 'Allah is rich beyond him.' A man came with a sa' (a dry measure of about 3 kg), so they said, 'Allah is rich beyond this sa'.' And they were hypocrites. The hypocrites always display schadenfreude toward the believers. Their greatest concern and sweetest speech, and the most pleasant speech to their ears, is to hear and say what contains the disparagement of Muslims and believers, and I seek refuge in Allah, because they are hypocrites.
They are the enemy هم العدو
As Allah the Exalted said, so beware of the hypocrite, beware of the hypocrite who shows you the opposite of what he hides. The important point is that they became such that if a man came with a lot, they said, 'This is the show-off,' and if he came with a little, they said, 'Allah is rich beyond your sa', and it will not benefit you.' So Allah the Exalted revealed:
Those who criticize the contributors among the believers concerning [their] charities الذين يلمزون المطوعين من المؤمنين في الصدقات
[At-Tawbah 9:79]
'They criticize' means they fault the givers of charity, meaning those who give charity. And those who criticize the givers of charity
the contributors among the believers concerning [their] charities المطوعين من المؤمنين في الصدقات
[At-Tawbah 9:79]
'the volunteers' means those who volunteer in charity
the ones who find nothing [to spend] except their effort والذين لا يجدون إلا جهدهم
[At-Tawbah 9:79]
'and those' is conjoined to His statement
the volunteers المطوعين
meaning and they criticize those who find nothing except their own effort. So they criticize these and those, and they mock them.
Allah will ridicule them, and they will have a painful punishment. سخر الله منهم ولهم عذاب أليم
[At-Tawbah 9:79]
So they mocked the believers, so Allah mocked them, and I seek refuge in Allah. In this is evidence of the Companions' eagerness to race to good and their struggle of their souls for that. And in this is also evidence that Allah the Exalted defends the believers. Look how Allah revealed a verse in the Book of Allah defending the believers whom these hypocrites were criticizing. And in it is evidence of the intensity of the enmity of the hypocrites toward the believers, and that the believers are not safe from them: if they did a lot, they would disparage them, and if they did a little, they would disparage them. But the matter is not up to them, but up to Allah the Exalted. For this reason, Allah mocked them and threatened them with painful punishment in His statement:
for them is a painful punishment ولهم عذاب أليم
[Al-Baqarah 2:10]
As for the ruling of this issue, Allah the Exalted said in His Book:
(7) So whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it, (8) And whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it. فمن يعمل مثقال ذرة خيرا يره ومن يعمل مثقال ذرة شرا يره
[Az-Zalzalah 99:7-8]
The little and the much of good, a person will see it and be rewarded for it, and the little and the much of evil, a person will see it and be punished for it. And it is authentic from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that if a person gives charity in the amount of a date, meaning what is equivalent to it from good earnings, and Allah does not accept except the good, then Allah the Exalted takes it in His right hand and grows it for him until it becomes like a mountain. Compare a grain of dates to a mountain; there is no proportion, the mountain is much greater. So Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) rewards a person for what he does of good, little or much. But strive to make your intention pure for Allah, not seeking any reward or thanks from other than Allah, and to be following the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in that. And Allah grants success.
