Explanation of the words of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding what he quoted: "

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : As for the third hadith, its text is the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Faith has over seventy branches or over sixty branches, the most excellent of which is the declaration that there is no god but Allah, and the humblest of which is the, removal of what is injurious from the path: and modesty is a branch of faith. الإيمان بضع وسبعون أو بضع وستون شعبة، فأفضلها قول لا إله إلا الله، وأدناها إماطة الأذى عن الطريق، والحياء من الإيمان أو شعبة من الإيمان
Sahih Muslim 35b
In this hadith, the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) explained that it is not a single trait or a single branch, but rather many branches. “Seventy-odd” means seventy-three to seventy-nine, or “sixty-odd” branches. However, the best of them is a single phrase: “There is no god but Allah.” If this phrase were weighed against the heavens and the earth, it would outweigh them, because it is the phrase of sincerity, the phrase of the oneness of Allah. It is the phrase by which I ask Allah to conclude my life and yours; whoever’s last words from this world are this phrase will enter Paradise. This phrase is the best of the branches of faith. The least of them is removing a harmful object from the road, meaning removing anything that harms those who pass by, such as a stone, thorn, glass, rag, or anything else. Whatever harms those who pass by, if you remove it, that is part of faith.
And Haya (This term "Haya" covers a large number of concepts which are to be taken together; amongst them are self respect, modesty, bashfulness, and scruple, etc.) is a part of faith. والحياء شعبة من الإيمان
Sahih al-Bukhari 9
In another hadith,
Modesty is part of faith الحياء من الإيمان
Modesty is a psychological state that comes over a person when he does something that makes him feel shy. It is a praiseworthy trait that was part of the character of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Modesty was among the character traits of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), to the extent that he was shy even of a virgin in her chamber (peace and blessings be upon him), except that he did not shy away from the truth. So modesty is a praiseworthy trait, but one does not shy away from the truth. Indeed, Allah says:
But Allah is not shy of the truth وَاللَّهُ لا يَسْتَحْيِي مِنَ الْحَقِّ
[Al-Ahzab 33:53]
, and He said:
Indeed, Allah is not timid to present an example - that of a mosquito or what is smaller than it إِنَّ اللَّهَ لا يَسْتَحْيِي أَنْ يَضْرِبَ مَثَلاً مَا بَعُوضَةً فَمَا فَوْقَهَا
[Al-Baqarah 2:26]
One does not shy away from the truth. However, as for what is other than the truth, it is among the praiseworthy morals to be modest. The opposite of that is the one who does not shy away, who does not care what he does or what he says. For this reason, it was said:
One of the things people have learned from the words of the earliest prophecies is, “If you don’t feel any shame, do whatever you like.” مما أدرك الناس من كلام النبوة الأولى إذا لم تستح فاصنع ما شئت
Bulugh al-Maram 16:89
And success is from Allah.
