Explanation of the words of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding what he quoted: "

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) stated, in what he quoted from Jabir ibn 'Abd Allah (may Allah be pleased with them both), that the Banu Salimah intended to move closer to the mosque, relocating from their homes, meaning their districts and neighborhoods, so that they would be near the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) mosque in order to catch the prayers with him and receive from his knowledge.
This reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so he asked them, saying: “It has reached me that you intend to relocate near the mosque?” They said: “Yes, O Messenger of Allah, we intended that.” Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Your homes record your footprints.”
It was explained that for them, every step is a good deed or a degree. Thus, this hadith provides evidence that when a person walks to the mosque, he does not take a step without a degree being raised for him by it. This was explained in the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), in which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever performs wudu and completes the wudu, then leaves his home for the mosque, and nothing other than prayer prompts him to leave, does not take a single step without Allah recording for him a degree by it and removing from him a sin by it. من توضأ فأسبغ الوضوء ثم خرج من بيته إلى المسجد لا يخرجه إلا الصلاة لم يخط خطوة واحدة إلا كتب الله له بها درجة وحط عنه بها خطيئة
He thereby acquires two things: first, that a degree is raised for him by it, and second, that a sin is removed from him by it. This is if he performs wudu in his home and completes the wudu, whether the steps are few or many. It is recorded for him that for every step, a degree is raised for him and a sin is removed from him. This hadith also provides evidence that when something is reported to a person about someone else, he should verify it before judging based on it. For this reason, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked the Banu Salimah before saying anything to them. He said:
“It has reached me that you intend to do such and such?” They said: “Yes.” بلغني أنكم تريدون كذا وكذا؟ قالوا: نعم
From this, it is understood that a person should verify when something is reported to him before judging based on what was reported, so that he may be a composed, steady, and respected person. As for believing everything that is reported, he will miss out on much and suffer harm. Rather, a person should verify. This hadith of the Banu Salimah also provides evidence of the many paths to good deeds, one of which is walking to the mosques. As mentioned previously, this is what Allah uses to raise degrees and remove sins. Indeed, frequent walking to the mosques is a cause for the forgiveness of sins, the expiation of bad deeds, and the raising of degrees. And Allah grants success.
