The reciter: The author (may Allah have mercy on him) transmitted in the context of the hadiths in the book of Jihad: "From Abu Bakr ibn Abi Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:
I heard my father saying in the presence of the enemy: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "The gates of Jannah are under the shades of the swords." A man with a shaggy appearance got up and said, "O Abu Musa! Did you hear the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say that in person?" Abu Musa replied in the affirmative; so he returned to his companions and said: "I tender you farewell greetings." Then he broke the scabbard of his sword and threw it away. He rushed towards the enemy with his sword and fought with it till he was martyred.

Riyad as-Salihin 1304
Al-Tirmidhi narrated it and said: It is a good, authentic hadith. And from Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said:

By Allah, do not hold back anything from it, and Allah will bless it for you.”

Thereupon the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "He accepted Islam for a short time but was rewarded much."

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
The Shaykh: These various hadiths were mentioned by al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) in his book *Riyad al-Salihin*, in the chapter on jihad. They contain several issues, among which is that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was excellent in his planning for his companions. This man came to him and said, “O Messenger of Allah, I want to go on an expedition, but I have nothing with which to go.” So the Prophet directed him to a man who had prepared for the expedition but had fallen ill. Then the man went to his companion, took his equipment, and said to his wife: “Do not hold back anything from him, for you will not hold back anything and Allah will bless it for us.” So he prepared him. In these hadiths is evidence that whoever equips a warrior and gives him what is sufficient for his expedition is like the one who goes on the expedition, and that whoever stays behind to look after the family of the warrior has a reward like his. This is also indicated by the case of Banu Lحيان, where the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) ordered them that one man should go out and one should remain to look after the family of the warrior, and he would have half the reward, meaning the other half belongs to the warrior. In these hadiths is also a virtue of jihad: that the gates of Paradise are under the shadows of the swords, meaning that whoever fights, his fighting is a cause for entering Paradise through its gates. It is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) that there is a gate in Paradise called the Gate of Jihad, through which those who strive in the cause of Allah enter. In these hadiths is also that martyrdom expiates everything of one’s deeds except debt, meaning the debt owed to a human being, for martyrdom does not expiate it. This is because the debt owed to a human being must be paid, either in this world or in the Hereafter. In this hadith is a warning against being lax about debt, and that it is not permissible for a person to be lax about debt, nor to take on debt except in dire necessity, not in pressing need, but in extreme dire necessity. This is because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) did not permit the man who said, “Marry me,” to do so, and he said:
I will marry the woman, he said: “I have nothing but my garment.” He said: “Your garment will not benefit her; if you give it to her, she will remain without a garment, and if you keep it for yourself, she will remain without a mahr. Seek even an iron ring.” So he sought but did not find one. Then he said: “I have married her to you with what you have of the Qur’an.”
and he did not say, “Borrow from the people,” even though marriage is a pressing need. But the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) did not permit him, nor did he guide him to borrowing, because debt is very serious. It was narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with a chain that has some issues that
The believer's soul is suspended by his debt until it is settled for him.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1078Hasan (Darussalam)
So the matter is serious, and do not take debt lightly. Debt is distress in the night and humiliation in the day. So a person must, as much as possible, guard against debt and not be extravagant in spending. For many people are found to be poor, yet they want to spend on their families and themselves as the rich spend, so they borrow from this one and that one, or take on debt, or engage in usury, and this is a great error. Meaning, if you have only one meal in the night and day, do not take on debt or borrow; be patient and say: “O Allah, make me self-sufficient.” Allah the Exalted said:
And if you fear privation, Allah will enrich you from His bounty
[At-Tawbah 9:28]
Some people’s negligence, may Allah grant us well-being, is that they borrow in order to carpet the entire house, even the stairs. Why is this wrong? Or they borrow to buy a luxurious car, even though a car of, for example, twenty thousand is sufficient for them, but they say, “No, I will buy one for a hundred thousand,” and he is poor. This is from poor management, from weakness of faith, and from lack of concern. For debt is not expiated even by martyrdom in the cause of Allah; martyrdom does not expiate debt. So how can you take on debt except in dire necessity? And I say, in dire necessity, not in need. Meaning, even if you are in need and you desire luxuries, do not take on debt. Do not buy anything for which you do not have the price. Be patient until Allah provides for you, then buy according to your blanket. For this reason, there is a correct common proverb: “Stretch your leg according to your blanket.” If you stretch it further, you will be exposed to the cold, the sun, and the like. So in this is a warning against debt, and that it is not permissible for a person to take on debt.
