The Shaykh : One should use good news for his brothers as much as he is able, but sometimes warning is better for his Muslim brother. His Muslim brother may be in a state of negligence regarding an obligatory duty or transgression of a forbidden act, and he may see that it is in the interest to warn him and make him fearful. So a person should use wisdom, but the aspect of giving good news should prevail. If a man came to him, for example, and said: “I have been excessive with myself and committed great sins, is there any repentance for me?” He should say: “Yes, give yourself good news, give yourself good news. If you repent, Allah will accept your repentance.” So joy enters him and hope enters him, so that he does not despair of the mercy of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). The result is that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
So you should not be extremists, but try to be near to perfection and receive the good tidings that you will be rewarded; and gain strength by worshipping in the mornings, the afternoons, and during the last hours of the nights. سددوا وقاربوا وأبشروا، واستعينوا بالغدوة والروحة وشيء من الدلجة، والقصد القصد تبلغوا
Sahih al-Bukhari 39
meaning: seek help at the ends of the day, its beginning and its end, and a portion of the night, and be moderate, be moderate, and you will attain it. It is possible that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to draw an analogy between spiritual travel and physical travel, for the person who travels physically should have his journey in the beginning of the day, in the end of the day, and in a portion of the night, because that is the comfortable time for the mount and for the traveler. And it is possible that he intended by that that the beginning and end of the day are places for glorification, as He the Exalted said:
(41) O you who have believed, remember Allah with much remembrance (42) And exalt Him morning and afternoon. يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اذْكُرُوا اللَّهَ ذِكْراً كَثِيراً وَسَبِّحُوهُ بُكْرَةً وَأَصِيلاً
[Al-Ahzab 33:41-42]
And likewise, the night is a place for standing in prayer. In any case, the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us not to make all our time a constant exertion in worship, because that leads to boredom, regret, fatigue, and ultimately abandonment. May Allah help us and you in His remembrance, His gratitude, and the excellence of His worship.
