The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "The chapter on the severity of the punishment for one who enjoining good and forbidding evil but whose actions contradict his words" The chapter before this one is about the obligation of enjoining good and forbidding evil, and this chapter is about the severity of the punishment for one who enjoins good but does not do it, or forbids evil but does it, may Allah protect us from that. This is because one in this state is not sincere in his enjoining and forbidding, because if he were sincere in his enjoining and believed that what he enjoined is good and beneficial, he would be the first to do it if he were rational. Likewise, if he forbade evil while believing that it is harmful and that doing it is a sin, he would be the first to leave it if he were rational. So, if he enjoins good but does not do it, or forbids evil but does it, it is known that his words are not based on belief, may Allah protect us from that. For this reason, Allah rebuked those who did that, and He the Exalted said:[Al-Baqarah 2:44] The question here is for rebuke, meaning how do you enjoin people to do good and forget yourselves so you do not do it, while you recite the Book and know good from other than good? And this question is for reprimand, meaning He reprimands them, saying: How does this thing happen from you? Where are your minds if you were sincere? An example of this is a man who orders people to leave riba (usury or interest) but he does it, or does something greater than it, such as saying to people, for example: Do not take riba in bank transactions, then he goes and takes riba through trickery, deceit, and cunning, and he does not know that the trickery, deceit, and cunning he has fallen into is a greater sin and a more serious crime than the one who did the act openly. For this reason, some of the Salaf, Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani (may Allah have mercy on him), said about those who use such tricks: "They deceive Allah as they deceive children; if they had done the act openly, it would have been lighter" And he spoke the truth, may Allah have mercy on him. Likewise, he orders people to pray but he himself does not pray. How can this be? How do you enjoin prayer and see it as good, yet you do not do it? Is this from reason? It is not from reason, let alone from religion. So, it contradicts reason and is foolishness in religion; we ask Allah for safety. And Allah the Exalted said: [As-Saf 61:2-3] [Al-Baqarah 2:104] He addressed them with faith, because the implication of faith is that a person does not do this, does not say what he does not do. Then He reprimanded them with His saying: [As-Saf 61:2] Then He clarified that this action is disliked by Allah, hated by Him with the most intense hatred. He said: [As-Saf 61:3] And the scholars said that "maqt" (hatred) is the most intense hatred. Allah the Exalted hates the man in this state who says what he does not do. And He the Mighty and Majestic clarifies to His servants that this is among what He hates, so that they may stay away from it, because the true believer stays away from what Allah has forbidden. And He said about Shu'ayb: [Hud 11:88] Meaning he says to his people: It is not possible that I forbid you from shirk (associating partners with Allah) and from shortening the measure and the scale, while I do it. It is absolutely not possible, because the messengers (peace and blessings be upon them) are the most sincere advisors to creation, and they are the most people who magnify Allah, obey His command, and avoid His prohibition. So, it is not possible that they contradict people by doing what they forbid them from doing. And in this is proof that the person who does what he forbids or leaves what he is commanded to do is contrary to the way of the messengers (peace and blessings be upon them), because they cannot contradict people by doing what they forbid them from doing. The hadiths will come, if Allah wills, explaining the punishment for one who does this, meaning one who leaves what he is commanded to do or does what he is forbidden from doing. And Allah is the One who grants success.

Do you not then use your reason?
أَفَلا تَعْقِلُونَ(2) O you who have believed, why do you say what you do not do? (3) Great is hatred in the sight of Allah that you say what you do not do.
O you who have believed
