Among the etiquettes: that the one who commands [good] should act upon what he calls to and leave off what he forbids.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Among the etiquettes of the one who enjoins good and forbids evil is that he himself should be knowledgeable and act upon what he calls to, and leave off what he forbids. If he commands people while he does not do what he commands, then that is contrary to the etiquettes of the one who enjoins and forbids, and it is contrary to the Shari'ah and reason. Allah Mighty and Majestic said:
(2) O you who have believed, why do you say what you do not do? (3) Great is hatred in the sight of Allah that you say what you do not do. يا أيها الذين آمنوا لم تقولون ما لا تفعلون كبر مقتا عند الله أن تقولوا ما لا تفعلون
[As-Saf 61:2-3]
. And the Exalted said, rebuking the Children of Israel:
Do you order righteousness of the people and forget yourselves while you recite the Scripture? Then will you not reason? أتأمرون الناس بالبر وتنسون أنفسكم وأنتم تتلون الكتاب أفلا تعقلون
[Al-Baqarah 2:44]
. Is there any reason or any religion in commanding a matter while you do not do it?
If we saw a man saying to people, "O people, pray, enter the mosque, and pray with the congregation," but he himself does not pray with the congregation, is this from reason or from religion at all? It is not from reason nor from religion, because if it were from religion, the man, or the command, would necessitate that this man be the first to do it. And if it were from reason, it would be said to him, "How do you do a thing, how do you leave a thing, you command people to do it while you believe it is the truth?" This is not from reason. For this reason, Allah the Exalted said:
Do they not use their reason? أفلا تعقلون
. And know that the one who commands people with what he does not do, his command will be lacking in blessing, and the lowest of people will say, "If this were good, he would have been the first to do it." So why does he command us to do a thing and not do it, and why does he forbid us from a thing and do it? Why does he command us to do a thing and not do it, and why does he forbid us from a thing and do it? Yes.
