The reciter: The author (may Allah have mercy on him) quoted in the chapter: “The Prohibition of Arrogance and Self-Admiration”:
From Harithah ibn Wahb (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say:Sahih al-Bukhari 4918 Agreed upon.
And from Abu Sa’id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said: Narrated by Muslim.
And from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1730Sahih (Darussalam) Agreed upon.
And from him (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Riyad as-Salihin 1852 Narrated by Muslim” .
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
These are hadiths that the author, al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him), cited in *Riyad al-Salihin* in the chapter: “The Prohibition of Arrogance and Self-Admiration”. We have previously discussed the verses regarding this, as well as some of the hadiths, indeed the hadiths that the author (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned in this chapter.
Then the author (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2605Sahih (Darussalam). This is a style that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) used, which is to present speech in the form of a question in order to make the addressee pay attention and understand what is being said. So he says, “Shall I not inform you?” Everyone will say, “Yes, inform us, O Messenger of Allah.” He said: Sunan Ibn Majah 4116Sahih (Darussalam):
: “Al-‘utal” means the harsh and coarse person. From this comes the “‘itlah,” which is a tool used to dig the earth, and it is harsh and coarse. So “al-‘utal” is the harsh and coarse person, may Allah protect us. : This means that there is an addition of bad character in him. : This is the point, meaning he has arrogance, may Allah protect us, and haughtiness. Arrogance toward the truth and arrogance toward creation. So he never softens toward the truth and does not show mercy to creation, may Allah protect us. These are the people of the Fire. As for the people of Paradise, they are the weak, the weak and poor who do not have anything to be arrogant about. Rather, they are always humble. They do not have arrogance or coarseness, because wealth sometimes corrupts its owner, causing him to be arrogant toward creation and to reject the truth, as Allah the Exalted said: [Al-'Alaq 96:6].
He also mentioned the hadith of the dispute between the Fire and Paradise:. So the Fire became the abode of punishment, may Allah protect us, and Paradise became the abode of mercy. It is the mercy of Allah, and the merciful among the servants of Allah dwell in it, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sunan Abi Dawud 3125Sahih (Al-Albani). He said: . So Allah, Mighty and Majestic, promised to fill the Fire and promised to fill Paradise, and He, Mighty and Majestic, does not break His promise.
But do you know what the outcome will be? The outcome will be as established by authentic hadiths, that the Fire will continue to be thrown into, and it will say, “Is there more?” As Allah the Exalted said:[Qaf 50:30], meaning it seeks more, because it has not been filled. So the Lord, Mighty and Majestic, places His foot upon it, and it contracts, some of it folding into some of it, and it says, “Qut, qut,” meaning, “Enough, enough. I do not want more.” So the Fire is filled in this way.
As for Paradise, the width of Paradise is the heavens and the earth, and the awliya (close friends of Allah) dwell in it, may Allah make me and you among them. Its people dwell in it, and there remains in it a surplus, meaning a place where no one is. So Allah creates for it groups of people and admits them into Paradise by His mercy. This is the result. So the Fire was filled by the justice of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and Paradise was filled by the favor and mercy of Allah the Exalted.
Then the author (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned the hadith of the man who lets his garment hang down. He, peace and blessings be upon him, said:Sahih Muslim 2085a. This is a serious matter, because a man is prohibited from letting his garment, or his trousers, or his shawl, or his izar hang below the ankle. It must be from the ankle and above. So if it hangs below the ankle, then this action is among the major sins, may Allah protect us. Because if it hangs down out of arrogance and vanity, then Allah will not look at him on the Day of Resurrection, nor speak to him, nor purify him, and for him is a painful punishment. And if it hangs down for other reasons, for example, because it was long and he did not notice it, then it is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: Sunan an-Nasa'i 5331Sahih (Darussalam). So the punishment is incurred in any case for what hangs below the ankles. But if it is out of arrogance and vanity, the punishment is greater. Allah will not speak to its owner on the Day of Resurrection, nor look at him, nor purify him, and for him is a painful punishment.
And if it is not out of vanity, then he will be punished by the Fire, may Allah protect us. So if someone asks, “What is the Sunnah?” We say: The Sunnah is from the ankle to the middle of the leg. The middle of the leg is Sunnah, and what is below it is Sunnah, and what is up to the ankles is Sunnah. Because this is the dress of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions, for they did not let their clothing go beyond the ankles, but it would be to the middle of the leg, or it would be raised a little, and all of this is from the Sunnah. And success is from Allah.
From Harithah ibn Wahb (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say:
And may I inform you of the people of the Hell-Fire? They are all those violent, arrogant and stubborn people.
And from Abu Sa’id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said:
Paradise and the Fire disputed, and the Fire said: “I have the tyrants and the arrogant,” and Paradise said: “I have the weak and the poor of the people.” So Allah judged between them, saying: “You, Paradise, are My mercy, and I will have mercy with you on whom I will. And you, Fire, are My punishment, and I will punish with you whom I will. And both of you I will fill.”
And from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
On the day of judgement, Allah will not look at one who arrogantly drags his garment.
And from him (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
There are three (types of) people whom Allah will neither speak to on the Day of Resurrection nor will He purify them (i.e., from their sins), nor will look upon them; and they will have a painful chastisement. These are: An old man who commits fornication; a king who is a great liar and a poor man who is proud.
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:

Should I not inform you about the people of the Fire
Every harsh, haughty and arrogant one.
Every arrogant
كلّ عتلّgluttonous
جوّاظproud
No! [But] indeed, man transgresses
He also mentioned the hadith of the dispute between the Fire and Paradise:
The Fire and Paradise disputed, and the Fire said: "Its inhabitants are the tyrants and the arrogant," and Paradise said: "Its inhabitants are the weak and the poor." So each disputed with the other, and Allah, Mighty and Majestic, judged between them. He said to Paradise: "You are My mercy, and I will show mercy to whom I will through you," and He said to the Fire: "You are My punishment, and I will punish whom I will through you."
Allah shows compassion only to those of His servants who are compassionate.
And for each of you, I have promised to fill you.
But do you know what the outcome will be? The outcome will be as established by authentic hadiths, that the Fire will continue to be thrown into, and it will say, “Is there more?” As Allah the Exalted said:
On the Day We will say to Hell, "Have you been filled?" and it will say, "Are there some more,"
As for Paradise, the width of Paradise is the heavens and the earth, and the awliya (close friends of Allah) dwell in it, may Allah make me and you among them. Allah will not look upon him who trails his garment out of pride.
Whatever of the Izar comes below the ankles is in the Fire.
And if it is not out of vanity, then he will be punished by the Fire, may Allah protect us.
