Explanation of the words of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding what he quoted: "

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reader: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may prayers and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon his family and all his Companions:
He said -may Allah have mercy on him-: "The chapter on anger when the inviolable rights of the Shari'ah are violated and in defending the religion of Allah the Exalted:
Allah the Exalted said:
and whoever honors the sacred ordinances of Allah - it is best for him in the sight of his Lord
[Al-Hajj 22:30]
.
And He said:
if you support Allah, He will support you and plant firmly your feet.
[Muhammad 47:7]
.
In this chapter are hadiths, among them: from 'Uqbah ibn 'Amr al-Badri (may Allah be pleased with him), he said:
A man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: I am late for the Fajr prayer because of so-and-so, because of how he prolongs it for us. I have never seen the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) become angrier in a sermon than he did on that day. He said: O people, among you are those who drive people away. So whoever leads the people, let him shorten the prayer, for behind him are the old and the young, and those with needs

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
Al-Hafiz al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said in his book *Riyad al-Salihin*: In the chapter on anger when the symbols of Allah Mighty and Majestic are violated, the inviolable rights of the Shari'ah:
Anger has several causes, among them: that a person defends himself; someone does something to him that angers him, so he becomes angry to defend himself. This is prohibited; this anger is prohibited, because a man asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said to him:
Advise me. He said: Do not become angry. He repeated it, saying: Advise me, and he was saying: Do not become angry
.
The second of the causes of anger is: anger for Allah Mighty and Majestic, when a person sees someone violating the inviolable rights of Allah, so he becomes angry out of jealousy for the religion of Allah and zeal for the religion of Allah. This is praiseworthy, and the person is rewarded for it, because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) had this as his characteristic and his Sunnah, and because it falls under the saying of Allah the Exalted:
and whoever honors the sacred ordinances of Allah - it is best for him in the sight of his Lord
[Al-Hajj 22:30]
,
And whoever honors the symbols of Allah - indeed, it is from the piety of hearts.
[Al-Hajj 22:32]
: So magnifying the symbols of Allah and magnifying the inviolable rights of Allah is that a person finds them great, and finds their humiliation great, so he becomes angry and avenges them, until he does what he is commanded to do, such as enjoining good and forbidding evil, and other things.
Then the author mentioned a second verse, which is the saying of Allah the Exalted:
O you who have believed, if you support Allah, He will support you and plant firmly your feet.
[Muhammad 47:7]
: And the meaning of supporting Allah is supporting His religion, for Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, in Himself does not need support; He is rich beyond all others. But the support here is supporting the religion of Allah by protecting the religion, defending it, being angry when it is violated, and other causes of supporting the Shari'ah. From this is jihad in the path of Allah, fighting so that the word of Allah is the highest. This is from supporting Allah. And Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, promised those who support Him with these two things:
He will support you and plant firmly your feet.
[Muhammad 47:7]
So consider now: if we support Allah once, He rewards us twice:
He will support you and plant firmly your feet.
[Muhammad 47:7]
, then He said after that:
But those who disbelieve - for them is misery, and He will waste their deeds.
[Muhammad 47:8]
: meaning that the disbelievers, in the face of the believers who support Allah, have woe: which is loss, humiliation, and degradation.
And He has made their deeds astray

Then he mentioned the hadith of 'Uqbah ibn 'Amr al-Badri (may Allah be pleased with him):
That a man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: I am late for the Fajr prayer because of so-and-so, due to how he prolongs it for us
: And this imam was prolonging the prayer for them more than the Sunnah, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) became angry. He says:
I never saw him become more angry in a sermon than he was on that day, and he said: O people, among you are those who drive people away, so let the one among you who leads the people shorten the prayer
: 'Those who drive away' means they drive people away from the religion of Allah. This man did not tell the people not to pray the Fajr prayer, but he drove them away by his action, by the prolonging which is outside the Sunnah, so he drove the people away. In this is an indication that anything that drives people away from their religion, even if a person does not speak of driving them away, falls under driving people away from the religion of Allah. For this reason, the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) would be lenient in religious matters, leaving what is good to ward off what is more severe in fitnah and harm. Indeed, he (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to build the Ka'bah on the foundations of Ibrahim, but he feared fitnah, so he left that. And he would fast while traveling, so when he saw his companions fasting and that fasting was difficult for them, he would break his fast to make it easier for them. So a person striving for people to accept the religion of Allah with tranquility, satisfaction, and enthusiasm, without any religious prohibition, is what was the guidance of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). The point of this hadith is the anger of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at this action performed by this imam.
In it is also an indication that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would become angry during a sermon when the inviolable rights of Allah were violated. And Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said:
Whenever Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) delivered a Khutbah (religious talk), his eyes would become red, his voice rose and his anger would become intensified, as if he (ﷺ) was like one warning an army and saying, "The enemy has made a morning attack on you. The enemy has made an evening attack on you."
Bulugh al-Maram 2:368
.
Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
So whoever of you leads the people in prayer he must be brief
Sahih Muslim 466a
: meaning let him lighten the prayer according to what the Sunnah brought.
For behind him are the old and the young, and those in need
: Among the followers are the weak, weak in build, weak in strength; among them is the sick, among them is one with a need, who has promised someone to go to him, or is waiting for someone, or something similar. So it is not permissible for the imam to burden the people more than what the Sunnah brought.
As for his praying with the people according to what the Sunnah brought, let him do so, whether some are angry and some are satisfied. And the one who is not satisfied with the Sunnah, may Allah not satisfy him. The Sunnah is to be followed, but what exceeds it is not. The imams in this case, or in this issue, are divided into three categories:
A category that is negligent, hastening with a speed that prevents the followers from doing what is recommended. This is an error and a sin, and he has not fulfilled the trust placed upon him.
And a category that is excessive, meaning: he burdens the people, as if he is praying for himself. You find him burdening the recitation, the bowing, the prostration, the standing after the bowing, and the sitting between the two prostrations. This is also an error and injustice to himself.
And the third prays with them as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) prayed. This is the best of the categories, and he is the one who fulfilled the trust in the most perfect way. And Allah is the One who grants success.
