Explanation of the hadith of Abu Sa'id 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: (O 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Samurah

The Shaykh : Then the author (may Allah have mercy on him) cited the hadith of 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Samurah that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him:
'Abdul al-Rahman b. Samurah
Sunan Abi Dawud 2929Sahih (Al-Albani)
: He called him by his name and his father's name so that he would pay attention to what was being conveyed to him, because the subject is not a light one,
Do not seek authority.
: meaning do not seek to be a ruler,
for if you are granted this position as a result of your asking for it
Sahih Muslim 1652c
: meaning because of your asking,
you will be left to your own devices, but if it is given to you without asking, you will be helped (by Allah).
Sunan an-Nasa'i 5384Sahih (Darussalam)
: and the one who supports is Allah, so if you are given it by your request, Allah leaves you to it and abandons you, may Allah protect us, and you will fail in it and not succeed and not prosper.
And if you are given it without asking: rather, it is the people who chose you and they are the ones who sought you, so Allah the Exalted will support you in it, meaning accept it and take it. This is similar to wealth, for the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said to 'Umar:
Take out of this wealth which comes to you without your being avaricious and without begging, but in other circumstance's do not let your heart hanker after it.
Sahih Muslim 1045a
: Therefore, a person who is employed should not ask for any of the positions. If he is promoted without asking, it is permissible for him to take it, but if he asks and persists, he fears that he may fall under the saying of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him):
Take out of this wealth which comes to you without your being avaricious and without begging, but in other circumstance's do not let your heart hanker after it.
Sahih Muslim 1045a
, so scrupulousness and caution dictate that one not ask for anything in promotion or appointment or otherwise. If you are given it, take it, and if you are not given it, the best, most scrupulous, and most God-fearing thing is not to demand it. The entire world is nothing, and if Allah provides you with a sufficient livelihood free of trial, it is better than much wealth in which you are tested. We ask Allah for safety,
Do not ask for governorship. For if it is given to you because of asking, you will be left to your own devices, but if it is given to you without asking, you will be helped (by Allah).
Sunan an-Nasa'i 5384Sahih (Darussalam)
