Question:
What is your opinion, Your Eminence, regarding the hadith:
Were it not for Muhammad, I would not have created youلولا محمد ما خلقتك
Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 26:240
, which is found in al-Bidaya wa al-Nihaya by Ibn Kathir, vol. 2, p. 348. Al-Hakim narrated it in his al-Mustadrak from the hadith of ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam, from his father, from his grandfather, from ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
When Adam committed the sin, he said: “O my Lord, I ask You by the right of Muhammad to forgive me.” Allah said: “O Adam, how do you know Muhammad when I have not yet created him?” He said: “O my Lord, because when You created me with Your hand and breathed Your spirit into me, You raised my head, and I saw written on the pillars of the Throne: There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. So I knew that You did not add to Your name except the most beloved of creation to You.” Allah said: “You have spoken the truth, O Adam. He is indeed the most beloved of creation to Me. And since you have asked Me by his right, I have forgiven you. And were it not for Muhammad, I would not have created you.”
. Al-Bayhaqi said: ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam narrated it alone, and he is weak in status. And Allah knows best?

Answer:
I said: This hadith is fabricated, as Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) clarified; for Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) created the jinn and mankind only to worship Him alone, having no partner, and among mankind is Adam (peace be upon him). And success is from Allah.
