A hadith regarding taking from the beard

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
What is the authenticity of the hadith narrated by al-Tirmidhi (may Allah have mercy on him) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he used to take from his beard, both in length and width?

Answer:
This hadith is invalid according to the scholars; it is not authentic from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Some people have clung to it. It is a report that is not authentic because its chain of narration includes 'Umar ibn Harun al-Balkhi, who is accused of lying. Therefore, it is not permissible for a believer to cling to this invalid hadith, nor to seek a dispensation based on what some scholars say or do regarding shortening the beard or taking what exceeds a handful. This is contrary to the authentic, established hadiths from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanding the letting of the beard to grow, respecting it, letting it hang down, and cutting the mustache and hiding it. This is as found in the two Sahihs in the hadith of Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), and as found in Sahih Muslim in the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) . The Sunnah governs all matters, and Allah the Exalted says:
He who obeys the Messenger has obeyed Allah
[Al-Nisa: 8], and He the Exalted says:
Say, "Obey Allah and obey the Messenger; but if you turn away - then upon him is only that [duty] with which he has been charged, and upon you is that with which you have been charged. And if you obey him, you will be [rightly] guided. And there is not upon the Messenger except the [responsibility for] clear notification."
[Al-Nur: 54], and He the Exalted says:
So let those beware who dissent from the Prophet's order, lest fitnah strike them or a painful punishment.
[Al-Nur: 63]. And success is from Allah.
