The Ruling on One Who Levels His Beard

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: What is the ruling on one who levels his beard, making it even with itself?

A: It is obligatory to let the beard grow, to leave it full, to let it hang down, and not to touch it with anything, for it is established from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
Trim the mustaches and let the beards grow; be unlike the polytheists.
It is agreed upon as authentic from Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both). Al-Bukhari narrated in his Sahih (may Allah have mercy on him) from Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Trim the mustaches and let the beards grow; differ from the polytheists
And Muslim narrated in his Sahih from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
Trim closely the moustache, and grow beard, and thus act against the fire-worshippers.
Sahih Muslim 260
.
And these hadiths all indicate the obligation of letting the beards grow, leaving them full, and letting them hang down, and the obligation of trimming the mustaches. This is what is prescribed, and this is what is obligatory, to which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) guided and commanded. In this, one follows him (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) , and it is a contradiction of the polytheists, and a distance from imitating them and from imitating women.
As for what al-Tirmidhi (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he used to take from his beard in length and width, it is a false report according to the scholars of knowledge; it is not authentic from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Some people have clung to it, but it is a report that is not authentic, because in its chain is 'Umar ibn Harun al-Balkhi, who is accused of lying. Therefore, it is not permissible for a believer to cling to this false hadith, nor to take a dispensation based on what some scholars say, for the Sunnah governs everyone. And Allah the Exalted and Majestic says:
He who obeys the Messenger has obeyed Allah
[Al-Nisa: 80]. And He says, Exalted is He:
Say, "Obey Allah and obey the Messenger; but if you turn away - then upon him is only that [duty] with which he has been charged, and upon you is that with which you have been charged. And if you obey him, you will be [rightly] guided. And there is not upon the Messenger except the [responsibility for] clear notification."
[Al-Nur: 54]. And He says, Exalted is He:
O you who have believed, obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you. And if you disagree over anything, refer it to Allah and the Messenger, if you should believe in Allah and the Last Day. That is the best [way] and best in result.
[Al-Nisa: 59]. And success is from Allah.
