What is the ruling on cleaning oneself from passing wind?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
What is the ruling on cleaning oneself from passing wind and other things that break the ablution, other than urination and defecation? And if the thing that breaks the ablution is only urination, is it obligatory for him to wash the anus in addition to the penis?

Answer:
The scriptural evidence indicates that cleaning oneself is only for urination and defecation. As for what comes out of the anus, such as passing wind, and likewise sleeping, touching the private parts, and eating camel meat, these and their like among the things that break the ablution do not require cleaning oneself; rather, the lawful ablution is sufficient for them, as indicated by the saying of the Exalted in Surat al-Ma'idah:
O you who have believed, when you rise to [perform] prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows and wipe over your heads and wash your feet to the anklesيَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا قُمْتُمْ إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ فَاغْسِلُوا وُجُوهَكُمْ وَأَيْدِيَكُمْ إِلَى الْمَرَافِقِ وَامْسَحُوا بِرُءُوسِكُمْ وَأَرْجُلَكُمْ إِلَى الْكَعْبَيْنِ
[Al-Ma'idah 5:6]
the verse [al-Ma'idah: 6].
There is no disagreement, praise be to Allah, among the scholars regarding this issue. Muqaffid al-Din Muhammad ibn 'Abdullah ibn Qudamah (may Allah have mercy on him) said in his book al-Mughni: "We do not know of any disagreement among the scholars that it is not obligatory to clean oneself from sleep or passing wind." End of quote.
The proof for this is the aforementioned verse, and what is established in the authentic hadiths regarding the description of the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) ablution; for it is not mentioned in them that he cleaned himself from sleep or passing wind or the like, but only that he cleaned himself from urination and defecation. If the thing that breaks the ablution is only urination, it is obligatory to wash what the urine touched on the penis, but there is no need to wash the anus if nothing from the excrement comes out during urination. Likewise, the testicles do not need to be washed if nothing from the urine touches them; because the purpose of cleaning oneself is purification from ritual impurity, so the place that the impurity did not touch does not need to be washed. However, if the thing that breaks the ablution is pre-seminal fluid, which is what comes out upon the effect of desire when the penis becomes erect due to looking at women, thinking, or touching, then this pre-seminal fluid obligates washing the private parts, due to hadiths reported from the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding this. Pre-seminal fluid is not semen; as for semen, it is the origin of the human being, and it is what comes out with a discharge and desire when the causes for that are present, so this obligates the full ritual bath, as is known from the scriptural evidence.
