Tawhid: The Foundation of the Religion and the Basis of the Faith

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The questioner: I ask you to explain the importance of tawhid (the oneness of Allah), especially given that many young people have lost interest in it. May Allah guide you.

Answer:
The Shaykh: Knowing tawhid (the oneness of Allah) is the origin of all origins and the foundation of the religion, as previously mentioned. The foundation of the religion is to understand the meaning of the testimony that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. This is the greatest obligatory duty, and it is the first thing to which the messengers called and to which our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called people: to instruct them in the two testimonies, to cast off idols and statues, and to worship Allah alone.
This is the first thing to which the messengers called, and it is the obligation of every accountable Muslim: to affirm the oneness of Allah and to devote worship to Him before all else. As Allah the Exalted said:
So know, [O Muhammad], that there is no deity except Allah and ask forgiveness for your sinفَاعْلَمْ أَنَّهُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَاسْتَغْفِرْ لِذَنْبِكَ
[Muhammad:19], and He said:
And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatmentوَقَضَى رَبُّكَ أَلَّا تَعْبُدُوا إِلَّا إِيَّاهُ وَبِالْوَالِدَيْنِ إِحْسَانًا
[Al-Isra:23], and He said:
Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and to parents do goodوَاعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ وَلَا تُشْرِكُوا بِهِ شيئًا وَبِالْوَالِدَيْنِ إِحْسَانًا
[An-Nisa:36], and He said:
And We certainly sent into every nation a messenger, [saying], "Worship Allah and avoid Taghut."وَلَقَدْ بَعَثْنَا فِي كُلِّ أُمَّةٍ رَسُولًا أَنِ اُعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ وَاجْتَنِبُوا الطَّاغُوتَ
[An-Nahl:36].
Therefore, it is obligatory for every accountable person to gain knowledge of the religion, to devote worship to Allah alone, and to understand the meaning of "There is no god but Allah" and the testimony that "Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah." The meaning of the first is the oneness of Allah and sincerity to Him, directing worship to Him alone and to nothing else, and believing that this is the truth. It is the foundation of the religion and the basis of the faith, as Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, said:
That is because Allah is the Truth, and that what they call upon other than Him is falsehoodذَلِكَ بِأَنَّ اللَّهَ هُوَ الْحَقُّ وَأَنَّ مَا يَدْعُونَ مِنْ دُونِهِ الْبَاطِلُ
[Luqman:30], along with belief in the Messenger of Allah and that he is truly a messenger, Muhammad ibn 'Abdullah ibn 'Abd al-Muttalib. It is obligatory to follow him and proceed according to his methodology, and deeds are not accepted except with two things: sincerity to Allah and following his Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him).
