Q: I find in books on tawhid (the oneness of Allah) a division as follows: 1- Tawhid al-'Ilmi al-Khabari (the oneness of knowledge and information). 2- Tawhid al-Iradi al-Talabi (the oneness of will and seeking). What is meant by the word "iradi" (of will) in the second category? Is it what Allah wills from His servant in His Shari'ah and rulings, or is it what the servant wills from his Lord, namely that he does not will anything other than Allah? And what is the divine will? And what is meant by the word "talabi" (of seeking)? Is the intention that it refers to the oneness of what the servant seeks from his Lord, namely that he does not seek Him and seek others? In some books, we find the second division expressed as "tawhid in intention and will." What is meant by the word "intention"? Is it meant to be the oneness of the servant's intention toward his Lord, i.e., that he intends his Lord and does not intend others? Please inform us, may Allah have mercy on you.
A : The meaning of tawhid al-talabi al-iradi (the oneness of seeking and will) is that the servant singles out his Lord for worship, in prayer, fasting, slaughter, vows, supplication, and other types of worship. This type is called tawhid al-'ibadah (the oneness of worship), in accordance with the saying of Allah, the Exalted:
[An-Nisa 4:36], and His saying, the Exalted: [Al-Bayyinah 98:5]. This is the meaning of the word of tawhid: "La ilaha illa Allah" (There is no deity but Allah); for this reason, the polytheists rejected it when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded them to say it, and they said: . As for the will of Allah, the Exalted, it is one of His attributes befitting Him, and it is of two types: A- Cosmic will (iradah kawniyyah), such as His will to create the heavens and the earth, sustenance, and lifespans. He, the Exalted, is the Doer of what He wills; whatever He wills to happen in reality must happen, due to His saying, the Exalted: [Hud 11:107]. B- Legislative will (iradah shari'iyyah), which is His will that His servants worship Him alone and not associate anything with Him. This will may or may not be realized by the servant; this is for a wisdom from Allah, the Blessed and Exalted. This is the will referred to in His saying, the Exalted: [An-Nisa 4:26]
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.

Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him
And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth
Have He made the gods one God? Indeed, this is something of great importance.
Indeed, your Lord is an effecter of what He intends.
Allah wants to make clear to you [the lawful from the unlawful] and guide you to the [good] practices of those before you and to accept your repentance. And Allah is Knowing and Wise.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
