The reader: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
He said, may Allah have mercy on him: "The chapter on the dislike of drinking from the mouth of a water skin or the like, and the clarification that this is a dislike of disapproval, not prohibition. It was narrated from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited cutting the mouths of water skins, meaning breaking their mouths and drinking from them. It is agreed upon (by al-Bukhari and Muslim). It was also narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited drinking from the mouth of a water skin or a leather bag. It is agreed upon (by al-Bukhari and Muslim). It was also narrated from Kabshah bint Thabit, the sister of Hassan ibn Thabit (may Allah be pleased with them both), that she said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to me and drank from the mouth of a hanging water skin while standing. So I went to its mouth and cut it off. Al-Tirmidhi narrated it and said: It is a good, authentic hadith. She only cut it off to preserve the place where the mouth of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had been, to seek blessing in it, and to protect it from being treated with contempt. This hadith is understood as clarifying permissibility, while the two previous hadiths are for clarifying what is better and more complete. And Allah knows best".

Among the etiquettes of drinking is that a person should not drink from the mouth of a water skin or a leather bag, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) prohibited it. The wisdom behind this is that water in the past was not as clean as it is now; so when it is in a water skin or a leather bag, it may contain harmful things, such as sediment, insects, or other things that are known to those who used them before. For this reason, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited cutting the mouths of water skins, meaning breaking their mouths so that a person breaks the mouth like this and then drinks. It is mentioned that a man once drank and a snake came out of the water skin. This is certainly dangerous, as it might bite him or harm him. Therefore, drinking from the mouth of a water skin is prohibited. However, this does not include drinking from a spout or from jars in which water is stored, because these are known to be clean, and they are like drinking from vessels. But if there is a need, there is no harm in a person drinking from the mouth of a water skin, such as if he needs water and does not have a vessel; then he drinks from the mouth of the water skin. Accordingly, the prohibition of this, as the author said, may Allah have mercy on him, is for the sake of dislike (makruh), not for prohibition (haram). It is also derived from the last hadith that it is permissible for a person to drink while standing if there is a need for it, even though the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) prohibited drinking while standing. But if there is a need, there is no harm, as in this case where the water skin is hanging, and a hanging one is high for a person sitting, and he does not have a vessel, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) drank from this hanging water skin. The hadith also contains evidence for the permissibility of seeking blessing in the traces of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and that is indeed the case. The Companions used to seek blessing in the sweat of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), in his saliva, in his clothes, and in his hair. As for anyone other than the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), one does not seek blessing in any of these things; one does not seek blessing in a person's clothes, hair, nails, or any of his belongings, except the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). And Allah grants success.
