He (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "Chapter on the explanation of the permissibility of drinking while standing and the explanation that the more complete and better way is to drink while sitting. It was narrated from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) that he said: I gave the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to drink from Zamzam, and he drank while standing. It is agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim. It was narrated from al-Nu'man ibn Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the gate of al-Rahbah and drank while standing, and he said: I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) do as you have seen me do. It was narrated by al-Bukhari. It was narrated from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) that he said: We used to eat while walking and drink while standing in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). It was narrated by al-Tirmidhi, and he said: It is a good and authentic hadith. It was narrated from Amr ibn Shu'ayb from his father from his grandfather (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) drinking while standing and while sitting. It was narrated by al-Tirmidhi, and he said: It is a good and authentic hadith. It was narrated from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he forbade a man from drinking while standing. Qatadah said: So we said to Anas, what about eating? He said: That is worse or more evil. It was narrated by Muslim. In a narration from him, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) warned against drinking while standing. It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih Muslim 2026 It was narrated by Muslim."
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
He (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The chapter on the permissibility of drinking while standing and sitting, and that drinking while sitting is better. The best way for both eating and drinking is for a person to be sitting, because this is the way of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). He did not eat while standing, nor did he drink while standing. As for drinking while standing, it is authentically reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he forbade it. Anas ibn Malik was asked about eating, and he said: "That is worse and more evil", meaning that if drinking while standing is forbidden, then eating while standing is even more so. But in the hadith of Ibn Umar, which al-Tirmidhi narrated and graded as authentic, he said: "We used to eat in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while walking, and we used to drink while standing". This indicates that the prohibition is not for the sake of making it haram (forbidden), but for leaving the preferred action. In other words, the best and most complete way is for a person to drink while sitting and to eat while sitting, but there is no harm in drinking while standing or eating while standing. The evidence for this is the hadith of Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him and his father), who said: "I gave the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) to drink from Zamzam, and he drank while standing".
