Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reader: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) quoted in the context of the hadith of Qays ibn Bashir al-Taghlibi (may Allah be pleased with him) in the chapter on the description of the length of the shirt, the sleeve, the lower garment, and the ends of the turban, saying: “So I saw Abu al-Darda’ pleased by that, and he kept raising his head to him and saying: Did you hear that from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? He would say: Yes. He kept repeating it to him until I thought he would fall on his knees. He said: So he passed by us on another day, and Abu al-Darda’ said to him: A word that benefits us and does not harm you. He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to us:
One who spends on (the maintenance of) horses (for jihad) is like the one who spreads his hand to give alms (sadaqah) and does not withhold it. المنفق على الخيل كالباسط يده بالصدقة لا يقبضها
Sunan Abi Dawud 4089Da'if (Al-Albani)
Then he passed by us on another day, and Abu al-Darda’ said to him: A word that benefits us and does not harm you. He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Khayrim al-Asidi is a good man, were it not for the length of his beard and the dragging of his lower garment نِعم الرجل خريم الأسيدي لولا طول جمته وإسبال إزاره
That reached Khayrim, so he hastened and took a razor and cut his beard down to his ears, and raised his lower garment to his mid-calves. Then he passed by us on another day, and Abu al-Darda’ said to him: A word that benefits us and does not harm you. He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say:
You are coming to your brethren; so tidy your mounts and tidy your dress, until you are like a mole among the people. Allah does not like obscene words or deeds, or do intentional committing of obscenity. إنكم قادمون على إخوانكم فأصلحوا حالكم وأصلحوا لباسكم حتى تكونوا كأنكم شامة في الناس فإن الله لا يحب الفحش ولا التفحش
Sunan Abi Dawud 4089Da'if (Al-Albani)
Abu Dawud narrated it with a good chain of narration”

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) said, in what he quoted from the hadith of Qays regarding the matter of Ibn al-Hanafiyyah and his passing by Abu al-Darda’ (may Allah be pleased with him), that he passed by Abu al-Darda’ and told him about the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with some hadiths. Then he passed by Abu al-Darda’ and said: “A word that benefits us and does not harm you”, meaning: Teach us a word that benefits us and does not harm you. So he informed him that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
He who spends to purchase a horse (for Jihad) is like one who extends his hand for spending out of charity without withholding it. إن المنفق على الخير كالباسط يده بالصدقة لا يقبضها
Riyad as-Salihin 797
Thus, spending on horses is among the charities because they are used in jihad in the cause of Allah.
