The reader: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) quoted, in the context of the hadiths in the chapter on the virtue of the greeting of peace and the command to spread it: "From al-Bara' ibn 'Azib (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us to do seven things: to visit the sick, to follow funeral processions, to say 'may Allah give you a healthy nose' to the one who sneezes, to help the weak, to assist the oppressed, to spread the greeting of peace, and to fulfill the oath of the one who swears. It is agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim; this is the wording of one of al-Bukhari's narrations. And from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
you will not enter Paradise until you believe, and you will not believe until you love one another. Shall I not tell you of something which, if you do it, you will love one another? Spread (the greeting of) peace among yourselves. لا تدخلوا الجنة حتى تؤمنوا ولا تؤمنوا حتى تحابوا أولا أدلكم على شيء إذا فعلتموه تحاببتم أفشوا السلام بينكم
Sunan Ibn Majah 3692Sahih (Darussalam)
Muslim narrated it. And from Abdullah ibn Salam (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say:
O people, exchange greetings of peace (i.e., say: As-Salamu 'Alaikum to one another), feed people, strengthen the ties of kinship, and be in prayer when others are asleep, you will enter Jannah in peace. يا أيها الناس أفشوا السلام وأطعموا الطعام وصلوا الأرحام وصلوا والناس نيام تدخلوا الجنة بسلام
Riyad as-Salihin 848
Al-Tirmidhi narrated it and said: It is a good, authentic hadith. And from al-Tufayl ibn Abi ibn Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him), who used to visit Abdullah ibn 'Umar and go with him to the market in the morning. He said: "Whenever we went to the market, Abdullah would not pass by a beggar, a shopkeeper, a poor person, or anyone else without greeting them. Al-Tufayl said: 'One day I came to Abdullah ibn 'Umar, and he asked me to accompany him to the market. I said to him: "What are you doing in the market? You do not stand to buy anything, nor ask about the goods, nor bargain for them, nor sit in the market gatherings." I said: "Let us sit here and talk." He said: "O Abu Bطن (Abu Bطن was a man with a large belly), we only go to the market for the sake of the greeting of peace, so that we may greet those we meet." Malik narrated it in al-Muwatta with a sound chain of narration."

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
These hadiths are in the chapter on the virtue of the greeting of peace and spreading it; we have already spoken about them. The hadith of al-Bara', the hadith of Abu Hurayrah, and the hadith of Abdullah ibn Salam have all been discussed previously, so there is no need to repeat the discussion. As for the hadith of al-Tufayl ibn Abi ibn Ka'b, it mentions a story of his with Abdullah ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them). Abdullah ibn 'Umar asked him to accompany him to the market one day, and Abdullah would greet everyone: the shopkeeper and everyone he passed by, whether he knew them or not. One day, al-Tufayl came to him and he said: "Let us go to the market." Al-Tufayl said: "What are you doing in the market? You are not buying anything, nor bargaining for anything. Let us sit and talk." He said: "I only go to the market for the sake of the greeting of peace, greeting the people. Because when a person greets and spreads the greeting of peace and makes it apparent, this is a cause for entering Paradise, as in the hadith of Abu Hurayrah:
you will not enter Paradise until you believe, and you will not believe until you love one another: should I not guide you to something doing which you will love one another: spread out salutation among you. لا تدخلوا الجنة حتى تؤمنوا ولا تؤمنوا حتى تحابوا أفلا أخبركم بشيء إذا فعلتموه تحاببتم أفشوا السلام بينكم
Sunan Abi Dawud 5193Sahih (Al-Albani)
And because when a person greets his brother and says 'As-salamu alaykum' (peace be upon you), or 'As-salamu alayka' (peace be upon you) if it is one person, ten good deeds are recorded for him for that. If he greets ten people, one hundred good deeds are recorded for him, and this is better than buying and selling. So Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) would enter the market for the sake of the large number of people he could greet, because no one comes to his house, and if someone does come, it is far fewer than those in the market, but in the market, people pass by and he greets them.
