The questioner : What is the ruling on hastening in prayer?
The Shaykh : One who hastens in prayer to the extent that it compromises the tranquility has no prayer, whether obligatory or voluntary. This is because a man came to the mosque and prayed without tranquility, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him:Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2692Sahih (Darussalam) three times. Therefore, tranquility is necessary. It is amazing at the haste of the children of Adam, their ignorance, and their injustice. How can one hasten at such a speed while addressing Allah and conversing with Him? If a person were standing with a friend talking to him, he would remain standing for an hour or two without getting tired. So how can it be when he is before Allah (Mighty and Majestic), conversing with Him and addressing Him, saying: "O my Lord, forgive me. Glory be to my Lord, the Most High. Glory be to my Lord, the Most Great," conversing with Him with His words? How can one hasten at such a speed? Is there an army behind him? No, absolutely not. But Satan is our enemy, and Allah does not love from us except what harms us. He loves to turn us away from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer, saying: "Come on, walk, walk, hurry, as if we are on hot coals." And I say: My brother, try to be tranquil in prayer. Be present in your mind, as if you are addressing Allah and conversing with Him, so that you may taste its flavor and so that it may be the coolness of your eye, just as it was the coolness of the eye of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). You will find comfort in it and love it. When you finish the prayer, you will say: "Perhaps Allah will accept the second prayer." As for stealing it by stealth, that is theft from Satan. We seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan. O Allah, protect us all from the accursed Satan.
