Among them is the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), and Abu ad-Darda, and the third: Abu Dharr

The Shaykh : As for fasting three days of every month, there are hadiths regarding it:
Among them is the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), and Abu ad-Darda, and the third: Abu Dharr: these three were advised by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) with one single advice, but each at a different time. He advised them to fast three days of every month, and he said to Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As:
Observing Saum (fasting) on three days of every month is equivalent to a full month's fasting. صوم ثلاثة أيام من كل شهر صوم الدهر كله
Riyad as-Salihin 1260
, meaning three days, and since one good deed is rewarded with ten times its like, it becomes thirty days, thus making it fasting the whole year.
He advised them to fast three days of every month but did not specify which days; he did not say: on the 13th, 14th, and 15th. He also advised them to pray the two rak'ahs of Dhuha.
The time for the two rak'ahs of Dhuha is from when the sun rises the height of a spear, meaning: from about one-third of an hour after the sun rises, until before the zenith, meaning: until about ten minutes before the zenith. All of this is the time for the two rak'ahs of Dhuha.
And it is recommended every day, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: Every limb of the sons of Adam, every limb, has a charity due to it every morning. The limbs are three hundred and sixty in a person; in one person there are three hundred and sixty limbs. So, how much charity is due to you every day, as a reward for Allah's guidance?
The student: ...

The Shaykh : No, three hundred and sixty charities, because the limbs are three hundred and sixty, so three hundred and sixty charities are due to you. But these charities are not necessarily with money; every tasbih (glorification) is a charity, every tahlil (declaration of oneness) is a charity, every takbir (declaration of greatness) is a charity, enjoining good is a charity, forbidding evil is a charity, even helping a man with his mount is a charity, even a man's intercourse with his wife is a charity. But the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Two rak'ahs that one prays in the Dhuha time suffice for all of that يُغني عن ذلك كله ركعتان يركعهما من الضحى
: So, if you pray two rak'ahs of Dhuha, you have fulfilled the charity due to you, and the rest remains voluntary. Then, these days are indeed good.
As for the third: he said:
to pray witr before sleeping وأن أوتر قبل أن أنام
Sahih al-Bukhari 1981
: This is for the one who fears he will not get up in the last part of the night. To the one who fears he will not get up in the last part of the night, we say: perform your witr before you sleep, be cautious for yourself. As for the one who hopes to get up in the last part of the night, let him make his witr in the last part of the night. This is how the Sunnah came from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). The scholars said: "And he only advised these people to perform witr before they sleep because the nature of their condition requires that". Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) used to memorize the hadiths of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) in the early part of the night and sleep in the last part of the night. Then, the three days are permissible to fast in the first ten days, or in the middle ten days, or in the last ten days, or one day every ten days, or one day every week. All of this is permissible, and the matter is broad. For this reason, Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said:
Indeed, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) did not care which month he fasted them in, whether from the beginning, the middle, or the end إن النبي صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم لا يبالي من أي الشهر صامها من أوله أو وسطه أو آخره
, but the 13th, 14th, and 15th are better and more excellent because they are the white days.
As for fasting on Thursday, it is also a recommended practice, but it is less than fasting on Monday. Fasting on Monday is better, and both are excellent. The reason their fasting is excellent is that it is narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that deeds are presented to Allah on these two days. He said:
and I love that my deeds be presented while I am fasting. فأحب أن يعرض عملي وأنا صائم
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 747Hasan (Darussalam)
.
And the best fasting is the fasting of Dawud: that a person fasts one day and breaks his fast one day. This is for the one who is able to do so and it does not cause him hardship, and it does not cause him to neglect other prescribed deeds, and it does not prevent him from learning knowledge. Because there are other acts of worship; if excessive fasting makes you unable to perform them, do not fast excessively. And success is from Allah.
