The Book of the Prayer of the Traveler and Its Shortening-04a

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: And Hārūn ibn ‘Abd Allāh and Muḥammad ibn Rāfi‘ narrated to us, saying: Ibn Abī Fudayk narrated to us from al-Ḍaḥḥāk ibn ‘Uthmān from Ibrāhīm ibn ‘Abd Allāh ibn Ḥunayn from Abū Murrā, the freed slave of Umm Hānī, from Abū al-Dardā‘, who said:
My Friend (ﷺ) instructed me in three (acts), and I would never abandon them as long as I live. (And these three things are): Three fasts during every month, the forenoon prayer, and this that I should not sleep till I have observed the Witr prayer.
Sahih Muslim 722
.

The Shaykh : Yes, the point is his statement
The two rak‘ahs of Ḍuḥā.
. In the first hadith, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, as narrated by Abū Dharr,
In the morning charity is due from every bone in the body of every one of you
Sahih Muslim 720
. The *salāmā* are the bones, meaning those with joints. Some scholars have mentioned that the body of every person has three hundred and sixty joints. Accordingly, the charities that are incumbent upon a person are...
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : ...three hundred and sixty charities, every day the sun rises. But it is not charity of wealth. For this reason, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said
And every *tasbīḥ* is a charity.
. If you say *Subḥān Allāh*, that is a charity
And every *taḥmīd* is a charity.
. If you say *Al-ḥamdu lillāh*, that is a charity
And every *tahlīlah* is a charity.
. A *tahlīlah* means "Lā ilāha illā Allāh"
every utterance of ‘God is most great’ is alms; enjoining good is alms; forbidding what is disreputable is alms; and two rak'as which one prays in the forenoon serve instead of that.
Mishkat al-Masabih 1311
. The Messenger (may the prayer and peace of Allah be upon him) made it clear that charity here is broader than being charity with wealth. So every act of drawing near by which a person draws near to his Lord is a charity. He (may the prayer and peace of Allah be upon him) even said
and in man's sexual Intercourse (with his wife, ) there is a Sadaqa
Sahih Muslim 1006
, meaning that if a person comes to his wife, it is a charity.
They (the Companions) said: Messenger of Allah, is there reward for him who satisfies his sexual passion among us? He said: Tell me, if he were to devote it to something forbidden, would it not be a sin on his part? Similarly, if he were to devote it to something lawful, he should have a reward.
Sahih Muslim 1006
,
It suffices for all of that to pray two rak'ahs of the Duha prayer.
. And this is a great good: that these two rak‘ahs expiate for you three hundred and sixty charities. And this indicates the recommendation of what?
The student: The prayer of...

The Shaykh : ...the Ḍuḥā prayer every day. Then he followed that with the hadith of Abū Hurayrah, that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) advised him with three things:
three fasts during every month, two rak'ahs of the forenoon prayer, and observing Witr prayer before going to bed.
Sahih Muslim 721a
. These are three things: First,
to fast three days each month
Sunan an-Nasa'i 1677Sahih (Darussalam)
. The Messenger (may the prayer and peace of Allah be upon him) did not specify them, nor did he clarify that they should be consecutive or scattered. Accordingly, if one fasts from the beginning of the month, it suffices; from the end of the month, it suffices; from the middle of the month, it suffices; one day and then another day, it suffices. The first day of the month, the last day of the month, and the fifteenth day of the month also suffice, because the hadith is general. And ‘Ā’ishah said:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) used to fast three days of every month and did not care whether he fasted them at the beginning of the month, in the middle, or at the end.
. But the best is that they be on the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth, that is, on the white days. Their being on the white days is not a condition for it being a recommended practice, but it is a matter of preference. Just as we say, for example, that praying at the beginning of its time is better than praying?
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : ...what? At the end of its time, and both are sufficient. This is the fasting of the three days: the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth are better, but it suffices to fast on days other than these three.
And the two rak'ahs of the Duha prayer.
And this is the point.
He advised him with the two rak‘ahs of Ḍuḥā. Their time is from when the sun rises the height of a spear until just before the midday. And the third is
to perform Al-Witr before sleeping
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 457Hasan (Darussalam)
. The scholars said that he advised him with witr before sleeping because Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) used to follow up memorizing the hadith of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) in the early part of the night and sleep in the late part of the night. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) ordered him to pray witr before sleeping. As for one who hopes to stand in the late part of the night, the best is to pray witr in the late part of the night. In this hadith there is a point of difficulty, which is that he said
My close friend advised me about three things.
,
My close friend advised me.
. How can he say "my friend" when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
I stand acquitted before Allah that I took any one of you as friend
Sahih Muslim 532
? Yes?
The student: ... the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), because the Messenger...

The Shaykh : Yes, his saying "my friend" means that Abū Hurayrah took him as a friend. As for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), he did not take Abū Hurayrah as a friend, but rather he said:
If I were to take a Khalil, I would have taken Abu Bakr
Sahih al-Bukhari 3656
.
And likewise, it came in the hadith of Abū al-Dardā‘ that the Messenger advised him with these three things. And likewise, it came in a third hadith where he advised Abū Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him). So they are three whom the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) advised with these three advices. And Allah is the One who grants success.
The reciter: The time is up, O Shaykh.

The Shaykh : The time is up? From Bahrain?
The student: Peace be upon you, our Shaykh.

The Shaykh : Do you have questions?
The student: Yes, may Allah bless you.

The Shaykh : Please go ahead.
