Al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said in his book *Riyad al-Salihin*: “Chapter on the Prohibition of Showing Off”
Riya' is the verbal noun of the verb ra'a, meaning to show off. It is said: ra'a, yura'i, riya', and mir'ah, just as one says: jahada, yujahidu, jihada, and mujahadah. The meaning of riya' here is that a person worships his Lord, Mighty and Majestic, but he beautifies his worship so that people see it and say, “How devout he is! How excellent his worship is!” and the like. He wants people to praise him for his worship of Allah.
