Exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted: (Those who are showing off)
Allah the Exalted said: [Al-Ma'un: 6-7] Also, when they perform obedience, their only aim is to curry favor with people and to have a status in society. Their aim is not to draw near to Allah (Mighty and Majestic). This is a show-off—may Allah protect us from that.gives charity so that people will say: How generous he is, this is a worshipper who beautifies his prayer so that people will say: How beautiful his prayer is, and the like. These are the show-offs. The origin of worship is for Allah, but they want people to praise them for it as well. They draw near to people through their drawing near to Allah. These are the show-offs, may Allah protect us from that.
As for the one who prays for the sake of people, meaning: He prays before the king—for example—or before someone else, bowing or prostrating in submission to him. This is a mushrik (one who associates partners with Allah), a disbeliever, and Allah has forbidden Paradise to him, and his abode is the Fire. But this person prays for Allah while being mindful that people will praise him for his worship, regarding him as a worshipper of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). This occurs frequently among the hypocrites, as Allah the Exalted said: [Al-Nisa: 142] Look at this description: [Al-Nisa: 142] So they are heedless of their prayer. Here it says: (Those who are showing off) And if a person asks: Are those who make their worship heard like them? For example: If a person recites the Qur'an and raises his voice in prayer and beautifies his recitation, and beautifies the performance and the voice so that it will be said: How beautiful his recitation is, would he be like those who are showing off?
Yes.
As came in the hadith: (Whoever makes his worship heard, Allah will make it heard, and whoever shows off, Allah will make him show off) The meaning is: Whoever makes his worship heard, Allah will expose him and reveal to people that the man is not sincere, but rather he wants people to hear him so they will praise him for his worship. And whoever shows off, likewise, Allah will make him show off. So the person who shows off to people or makes his worship heard will be exposed by Allah, and his affair will become clear, whether soon or later.
Allah the Exalted said:
(6) Those who make show [of their deeds] (7) And withhold [simple] assistance.
الَّذِينَ هُمْ يُرَاؤُونَ * وَيَمْنَعُونَ الْمَاعُونَAs for the one who prays for the sake of people, meaning: He prays before the king—for example—or before someone else, bowing or prostrating in submission to him. This occurs frequently among the hypocrites, as Allah the Exalted said:
And when they stand for prayer, they stand lazily, showing [themselves to] the people and not remembering Allah except a little,
وَإِذَا قَامُوا إِلَى الصَّلاةِ قَامُوا كُسَالَى يُرَاؤُونَ النَّاسَ وَلا يَذْكُرُونَ اللَّهَ إِلَّا قَلِيلاًAnd when they stand for prayer, they stand lazily
