The Ruling on Criticizing Lineages and Lamenting over the Dead

Q: His Eminence Shaykh Abdul Aziz ibn Abdullah ibn Baz, the Grand Mufti of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the President of the Committee of Senior Scholars and the Departments of Islamic Research and Ifta, was asked: What is the explanation of the hadith Sahih Muslim 67 and what is the meaning of disbelief in this hadith?
His Eminence answered by saying: This is an authentic hadith narrated by Muslim in his Sahih from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him).
[His Eminence explained that criticizing lineages means:] belittling people's lineages and finding fault with them with the intention of looking down on them and blaming them.
His Eminence said: However, if it is in the nature of reporting information, such as saying "So-and-so is from Banu Tamim and among their characteristics is such-and-such," or "he is from Qahtan," or "he is from Quraysh," or "he is from Banu Hashim," reporting their characteristics without criticizing their lineages, then that is not among the criticism of lineages.
[His Eminence also explained that lamenting over the dead means:] raising the voice in weeping over the deceased, and His Eminence said: It is forbidden.
His Eminence Shaykh Ibn Baz clarified that the meaning of disbelief here is: disbelief less than disbelief, and it is not the absolute disbelief known by the definite article, as in his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):Sahih Muslim 82b narrated by Muslim in his Sahih.
His Eminence said: And this is the major disbelief in the most correct opinion of the scholars. His Eminence indicated that the scholars mentioned that there are two types of disbelief, two types of oppression, and two types of open sinfulness.
His Eminence continued by saying: Likewise, there are two types of shirk (associating partners with Allah): major and minor. So shirk is major and minor; the major shirk is like: calling upon the dead, seeking aid from them, making vows for them, or for idols, trees, stones, and stars. And the minor shirk is like: "If it were not for Allah and so-and-so," or "What Allah willed and so-and-so willed." And it is obligatory to say: "If it were not for Allah, then so-and-so," and "What Allah willed, then so-and-so willed."
His Eminence added: Likewise, swearing by other than Allah, such as swearing by the Prophet, or by the life of so-and-so, or by trust, this is among the minor shirk.
His Eminence, the Grand Mufti of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, said: Likewise, showing off in worship (riya') is like when one seeks forgiveness from Allah so that people will hear, or reads so that he shows off to people, so it is minor shirk.
His Eminence continued by saying: There are two types of oppression: major, which is shirk (associating partners with Allah) with Allah, as He the Exalted said: [Surat al-Baqarah: 254] and as He the Exalted said: [Al-An'am: 82]. As for the minor oppression, His Eminence Shaykh Ibn Baz said: It is like oppressing people in their blood and wealth, and oppressing oneself with sins: such as unlawful sexual intercourse, drinking intoxicants, and the like. We seek refuge in Allah from that.
Two (things) are found among men which are tantamount to unbelief: slandering one's lineage and lamentation on the dead.

Between man and polytheism and unbelief is the abandonment of salat.

And the disbelievers - they are the wrongdoers.
وَالْكَافِرُونَ هُمُ الظَّالِمُونَThey who believe and do not mix their belief with injustice - those will have security, and they are [rightly] guided.
الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَلَمْ يَلْبِسُوا إِيمَانَهُمْ بِظُلْمٍ أُولَئِكَ لَهُمُ الْأَمْنُ وَهُمْ مُهْتَدُونَ
