The Ruling on Lamentation and Wailing over the Dead

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
A message was received for the program from the listener Mahmoud Muhammad Salaka, an Egyptian working in Iraq. Our brother has several questions. In his first question, he asks about the ruling in the religion regarding the lamentation (nada) performed for the deceased.

Answer:
Lamenting for the deceased and wailing over him is forbidden and an abomination. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said in the authentic hadith:
He is not one of us (one among the Ummah of Islam) who beat the cheeks or tore the front opening of the shirt or uttered the slogans of (the days of) Jahiliya (ignorance).
Sahih Muslim 103a
, agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim from the hadith of Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) in the two Sahihs. Also in the two Sahihs, from the hadith of Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), that he said:
I have no concern with one with whom the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) has no concern, Verily the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) has no concern with that woman who wails loudly, shaves her hair and tears (her garment in grief).
Sahih Muslim 104a
. He said: "And the one who raises her voice is the one who raises her voice at the time of calamity, the one who shaves her head is the one who shaves her hair at the time of calamity, and the one who tears her clothes is the one who tears her garment at the time of calamity." It is also established from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
The deceased is punished for the wailing over him.
Sunan Ibn Majah 1593Sahih (Darussalam)
. And in another hadith, the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him)
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed the wailer and the listener.
. And he also said (peace and blessings be upon him):
Among my people there are four characteristics belonging to pre-Islamic period which they do not abandon: boasting of high rank, reviling other peoples' genealogies, seeking rain by stars, and walling.
Sahih Muslim 934
, meaning: wailing over the deceased. And he said:
If the wailing woman does not repent before she dies, she will be made to stand on the Day of Resurrection wearing a garment of pitch and a chemise of mange.
Sahih Muslim 934
, narrated by Muslim in his Sahih.
So, wailing over the dead, lamentation, and enumerating the virtues: "Oh his back... and the breaking of his back... oh his companion... oh his support... oh his children... oh his parents...", this is not permissible. The obligatory thing is patience, seeking reward from Allah, making du'a for the deceased, and seeking forgiveness for him. As for crying, there is no harm... tears from the eye are not a problem... sadness of the heart is not a problem. It is established from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said (peace and blessings be upon him) when his son Ibrahim died:
The eyes are shedding tears and the heart is grieved, and we will not say except what pleases our Lord, O Ibrahim ! Indeed we are grieved by your separation.
Sahih al-Bukhari 1303
. This is what he said (peace and blessings be upon him). And he said (peace and blessings be upon him) one day among his companions:
God does not punish for the tears the eye sheds or the grief the heart experiences, but He punishes for this (pointing to his tongue), or He shows compassionإن الله لا يعذب بدمع العين ولا بحزن القلب، وإنما يعذب بهذا أو يرحم، وأشار إلى لسانه
Mishkat al-Masabih 1724
. May Allah send blessings and peace upon him.
So, it is obligatory for Muslims to be patient, not to be distressed, and not to engage in what Allah has forbidden, such as lamentation, wailing, tearing clothes, slapping cheeks, and making du'a with the supplications of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance. This is the abomination. And Allah says:
but give good tidings to the patient, (156) Who, when disaster strikes them, say, "Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return." (157) Those are the ones upon whom are blessings from their Lord and mercy. And it is those who are the [rightly] guided.
[al-Baqarah:157]. And in Sahih Muslim also, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), that he said:
Two (things) are found among men which are tantamount to unbelief: slandering one's lineage and lamentation on the dead.
Sahih Muslim 67
. This indicates that wailing is among the major sins; one should beware of it. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
