The Ruling on a Muslim Eating with a Disbeliever

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: If a Muslim eats with a Christian or other disbelievers, or drinks with them, is that considered forbidden? And if that is forbidden, what do we say about the saying of Allah the Exalted:
and the food of those who were given the Scripture is lawful for you and your food is lawful for themوَطَعَامُ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ حِلٌّ لَكُمْ وَطَعَامُكُمْ حِلٌّ لَهُمْ
[Al-Ma'idah: 5]?

A: Eating with a disbeliever is not forbidden if there is a need for it or a legitimate Shari'ah interest. However, do not take them as companions and eat with them without a legitimate Shari'ah reason or interest, and do not be intimate with them or laugh with them. But if there is a need for it, such as eating with a guest, or to invite them to Allah and guide them to the truth, or for other legitimate Shari'ah reasons, then there is no harm.
The permissibility of the food of the People of the Book for us does not imply taking them as companions and close associates, nor does it imply sharing meals and drinks with them without need or legitimate Shari'ah interest. And success is from Allah.
