The disbeliever is not the brother of the Muslim

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The question reads: A Christian lives with me and says to me, “My brother, we are brothers,” and he eats and drinks with us. Is this permissible or not?

Answer: The disbeliever is not the brother of the Muslim, and Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, says:
The believers are but brothersإِنَّمَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ إِخْوَةٌ
[Al-Hujurat: 10]. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The Muslim is the brother of the Muslimالمسلم أخو المسلم
So the disbeliever—whether he is a Jew, a Christian, a polytheist, a Zoroastrian, a communist, or otherwise—is not the brother of the Muslim. It is not permissible to take him as a companion or a friend. However, if one eats with him occasionally without taking him as a companion or a friend, that may occur at a general feast or an occasional feast, and there is no blame in that. But taking him as a companion, a close associate, and a dining partner is not permissible; for Allah has severed the loyalty and love between the Muslims and the disbelievers. He said in His great Book:
There has already been for you an excellent pattern in Abraham and those with him, when they said to their people, "Indeed, we are disassociated from you and from whatever you worship other than Allah. We have denied you, and there has appeared between us and you animosity and hatred forever until you believe in Allah aloneقَدْ كَانَتْ لَكُمْ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ فِي إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَالَّذِينَ مَعَهُ إِذْ قَالُوا لِقَوْمِهِمْ إِنَّا بُرَآءُ مِنْكُمْ وَمِمَّا تَعْبُدُونَ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ كَفَرْنَا بِكُمْ وَبَدَا بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَكُمُ الْعَدَاوَةُ وَالْبَغْضَاءُ أَبَدًا حَتَّى تُؤْمِنُوا بِاللَّهِ وَحْدَهُ
[Al-Mumtahanah: 4]. And He said:
You will not find a people who believe in Allah and the Last Day having affection for those who oppose Allah and His Messenger, even if they were their fathers or their sons or their brothers or their kindredلا تَجِدُ قَوْمًا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ يُوَادُّونَ مَنْ حَادَّ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ وَلَوْ كَانُوا آبَاءَهُمْ أَوْ أَبْنَاءَهُمْ أَوْ إِخْوَانَهُمْ أَوْ عَشِيرَتَهُمْ
[Al-Mujadila 58:22]
the verse [Al-Mujadilah: 22].
It is obligatory for the Muslim to disavow the people of shirk (associating partners with Allah) and to hate them for the sake of Allah. But he should not harm them, hurt them, or transgress against them without right, as long as they are not at war with us. However, he should not take them as companions or brothers. And if it happens that he eats with them at a general feast or with incidental food, without companionship, loyalty, or affection, there is nothing wrong with it.
It is obligatory for the Muslim to treat the disbelievers, if they are not at war with the Muslims, with Islamic conduct by fulfilling trusts and avoiding deception, betrayal, and lying. And if a dispute arises between him and them, he should argue with them in the best manner and be just in the dispute, in accordance with the saying of the Exalted:
And do not argue with the People of the Scripture except in a way that is best, except for those who commit injustice among themوَلا تُجَادِلُوا أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ إِلا بِالَّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ إِلا الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا مِنْهُمْ
[Al-'Ankabut: 46].
It is prescribed for the Muslim to call them to good, advise them, and be patient with that, along with good neighborly relations and kind speech, due to the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic:
Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a way that is bestادْعُ إِلَى سَبِيلِ رَبِّكَ بِالْحِكْمَةِ وَالْمَوْعِظَةِ الْحَسَنَةِ وَجَادِلْهُمْ بِالَّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ
[An-Nahl: 125]. And His saying, Glorified is He:
And speak to people good [words]وَقُولُوا لِلنَّاسِ حُسْنًا
[Al-Baqarah: 83]. And the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
One who guides to something good has a reward similar to that of its doer.من دل على خير فله مثل أجر فاعله
Sahih Muslim 1893a
. The verses and hadiths in this meaning are numerous.
