The Ruling on Seclusion in the Workplace

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: I am a nurse and I work in the men's ward. There is a nurse working in the same section with me after the official working hours, and this continues until dawn. Sometimes complete seclusion occurs between us. We fear for ourselves from fitnah (trial/temptation) and we are unable to change this situation. Should we leave the job out of fear of Allah, knowing that we have no other job for our livelihood? We ask you to guide us with what you see?

A: It is not permissible for those in charge of hospitals to assign a male nurse and a female nurse to stay alone together at night for guarding and monitoring. Rather, this is an error and a great evil, and it amounts to inviting people to immorality. If a man is alone with a woman in one place, one cannot be safe from Satan making the act of immorality and its means attractive to them. For this reason, it is authentically reported from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
A man should not be alone with a woman, for Satan is the third among them.لا يخلون رجل بامرأة فإن الشيطان ثالثهما
Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 2:94
Therefore, this work is not permissible, and it is obligatory for you to leave it; because it is forbidden and leads to what Allah has forbidden. And Allah will replace it with something better for you if you leave it for the sake of Allah, the Exalted, as Allah said:
And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way outوَمَنْ يَتَّقِ اللَّهَ يَجْعَلْ لَهُ مَخْرَجًا ۝
[At-Talaq 65:2]
and He will provide for him from where he does not expect [Al-Talaq: 2-3] and His saying, the Exalted:
And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him of his matter ease.وَمَنْ يَتَّقِ اللَّهَ يَجْعَلْ لَهُ مِنْ أَمْرِهِ يُسْرًا
[Al-Talaq: 4]. Likewise, the female nurse must beware of this and should resign if her request is not met; because each of you is accountable for what Allah has made obligatory upon you and what He has forbidden.
