Is seeking knowledge and memorizing the Qur'an to teach the people of the village a form of showing off?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: If a person memorizes some of the religious sciences in order to fulfill his role in the village where he lives, and memorizes the Qur'an so that he can lead the young men in the night prayer of Ramadan, would this be a type of minor shirk (associating partners with Allah)?

A: It is known from the evidence of the Shari'ah that seeking knowledge and understanding the religion is among the best of acts of drawing near to Allah and obedience. Likewise, studying the Noble Qur'an, caring to recite it frequently, and striving to memorize it or whatever is easy of it, all of this is among the best of acts of drawing near to Allah. So if you do what is required of you in teaching the people of your village, guiding them, praying with them, and leading the young men and others in prayer, all of this is righteous work for which you will be thanked and rewarded. It is not showing off, and it is not shirk, if your intention is for the sake of Allah and the Hereafter, and you do not seek to show off to people or seek their praise or commendation, but rather you intend by it to benefit them and to provision yourself with knowledge and understanding of the religion. It only becomes minor shirk if you do it to show off to people and seek their praise, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The thing I fear most for you is the lesser shirkإن أخوف ما أخاف عليكم الشرك الأصغر
Bulugh al-Maram 16:48
He was asked about it, and he said:
Showing off is when a man stands to pray and beautifies his prayer because he sees people looking at himالرياء يقوم الرجل فيصلي فيزين صلاته لما يرى من نظر الناس إليه
.
Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) says on the Day of Resurrection to those who show off:
Go to those for whom you used to show off in this world, and see if you find any reward with themاذهبوا إلى من كنتم تراءون في الدنيا، فانظروا هل تجدون عندهم من جزاء
So showing off is when you do an act and intend for people to see you and praise you and commend you. This includes seeking a reputation, such as reciting so that they praise you and say, "He is a good reciter and recites well," or increasing your remembrance of Allah so that they praise you and say, "He frequently remembers Allah," or enjoining good and forbidding evil so that you are praised and commended. This is showing off, and it is minor shirk. So it is obligatory to be cautious of that, and to do your deeds for Allah alone, not for the sake of showing off to people or their praise or commendation. But you learn in order to act, you teach your brothers and pray with them, you hope for the reward with Allah, and you intend by it to benefit them, not for showing off or reputation.
And if you read from the mushaf, there is no harm in leading your brothers in prayer from the mushaf in Ramadan. The freed slave of 'Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) used to lead her in prayer from the mushaf. So there is no blame on the one who prays if he reads from the mushaf in the night prayer of Ramadan if he does not have it memorized. And if he has it memorized by heart and recites it from memory, that is better and more excellent. But there is no harm in reading from the mushaf when there is a need for it.
