Ruling on covering up in front of a Christian maid
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: We have a Christian maid. Is it obligatory for us to cover up in front of her?
Answer: First: It must be known that it is not permissible to bring disbelievers into this Peninsula, whether they are Christians or not. This is because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered the disbelievers to be expelled from this Peninsula, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) advised at his death to expel them from this Peninsula. This Peninsula includes the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and the Gulf states; all these countries are within the Arabian Peninsula. Therefore, it is obligatory that disbelievers not be allowed to remain there, including Jews, Christians, Buddhists, Communists, polytheists, and everyone whom Islam rules to be a disbeliever. It is not permissible for them to stay, be allowed to remain, or be brought into this Peninsula except in cases of extreme necessity as determined by the one in authority, such as a need for a temporary matter, after which they return to their country. This applies to those whose coming is necessitated by dire necessity or a pressing need for this Kingdom and similar places like Yemen and the Gulf states.
As for bringing them in to reside there, it is not permissible. Rather, one must suffice with Muslims in every place. The funds spent on these disbelievers should be spent on Muslims. One should select from among the Muslims those known for uprightness and strength in performing the work according to their capacity and ability. One should also choose from among the Muslims those who are furthest from religious innovations and open sins. One should not employ anyone but one who is good, benefits the country, and does not harm it. This is the obligatory course of action. However, if one is afflicted with having brought in one of these disbelievers, such as a Christian or others, then he must hasten to get rid of them and return them to their countries as soon as possible.
It is not obligatory for the Muslim woman to cover up in front of the disbelieving woman according to the most correct of the scholars' opinions. Some scholars held that it is obligatory for the Muslim woman to cover up in front of the disbelieving woman, citing the saying of the Exalted in Surat al-Nur, where Allah the Exalted forbade the believing women from displaying their adornment except to their husbands. He, the Exalted, said:[An-Nur 24:31] until He, the Exalted, said: [al-Nur: 31].
Some scholars said: "This means their believing women." So if the women are disbelievers, the believing woman does not display her adornment to them. Others said: "It means women of their kind, whether believing or not." This is the most correct opinion. Therefore, the believing woman is not required to cover up in front of the disbelieving woman, because it is established that Jewish women in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in Madinah, and likewise polytheist women, would enter upon the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). It is not mentioned that they used to cover up in front of them. If this had been the case with the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) or others, it would have been transmitted, because the Companions did not leave anything untransmitted. This is the preferred and stronger opinion.
