The Ruling on Eating Food Prepared by Disbelieving Female Servants
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
What is the ruling on eating what a female servant from among the People of the Book prepares, with evidence? And what is the ruling if the servant is a polytheist, with evidence?
Answer:
What the servant prepares is not a problem if you do not know of anything that would render the food impure, whether she is from the People of the Book, for their food is lawful for us, or she is from other than the People of the Book; there is no harm in that, except if you know of something she did that renders the food impure, or something from the forbidden meats.
As for her being a servant, and the household bringing lawful meat, but she lights the fire, washes the pots, cooks in the pot, and the like, that does not make it forbidden for the Muslim; but it is not permissible to bring in disbelieving servants to this Peninsula. It is not permissible to employ them, even if they are numerous now; their number is not an excuse. Rather, it is obligatory to keep them away and not to bring them in.
We mentioned to you in the previous lesson, last night or the night before, and we have said this more than once in other writings: It is not permissible to bring in a Jew, a Christian, a Zoroastrian, a Buddhist, a polytheist, or a Hindu. Every disbelieving woman is not to be brought in, and every disbelieving man is not to be brought in. This Peninsula, Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) has forbidden for its people that two religions remain in it, so that nothing remains in it except Islam.
And it is obligatory that nothing remain in it except Islam, and it is not permissible to bring disbelievers into it except for a temporary occasion, such as a disbeliever who comes to sell trade goods and returns quickly, or a messenger who comes for the one in authority, or a need of the one in authority. This is like what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did with the Jews of Khaybar when the Muslims were occupied with jihad; he left them in the land for farming and plowing until 'Umar ibn al-Khattab expelled them when they were no longer needed.
The point is: they are not to be brought in except for a temporary need that then ceases. As for bringing them in for years, or for a long period for service and upbringing, its harm is great and its evil is much. It is not permissible for two reasons, rather for several matters:
The most important and greatest of them is that disbelievers are not to be brought into this Peninsula, and disbelievers are not to be in it, because their harm is great, in their beliefs, their morals, and other things.
The second matter: entrusting them with the affairs of Muslims, such as upbringing and other things, harms the Muslims and causes them to take from their morals, customs, and vile beliefs what harms them.
The third matter is that it leads to great corruption. If Muslims mix with disbelievers, that leads to great corruption, whatever the situation, whether the disbeliever is a driver, a servant, a worker, or in any other state.
And the rulers must take the initiative in this matter, expel them, and terminate their contracts, so that the Muslims remain safe from their evil.
And the rulers have been addressed regarding this. The scholars wrote to them about this, and they promised to end the presence of these people and to strive to remove them, so that no one remains except those whose presence is required by dire necessity. We ask Allah to help them and grant them success.
