The Ruling on Smoking, Selling, and Trading in Tobacco
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: What is the ruling on smoking? Is it forbidden or disliked? And what is the ruling on selling it and trading in it? A. H. A. H.
Answer: Smoking is forbidden because it is impure and contains many harms. Allah has only permitted His servants the good things among foods and drinks and other things, and He has forbidden them the impure things.
He said : [Al-Ma'idah: 4]. And He, the Exalted, said in describing His Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) in Surat al-A'raf: [Al-A'raf: 157]. Smoking, in all its types, is not among the good things, but it is among the impure things. Likewise, all intoxicants are among the impure things. It is not permissible to smoke, sell, or trade in tobacco because of the great harms and dire consequences involved in that.
It is obligatory for whoever smokes or trades in it to hasten to repent and turn back to Allah, the Exalted and Majestic, to feel remorse for what has passed, and to resolve not to return to it. And whoever repents sincerely, Allah will accept his repentance, as He said : [An-Nur: 31]. And He, the Exalted, said: [Ta-Ha: 82]. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sunan al-Bayhaqi 16:896. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sunan Ibn Majah 4250Da’if (Darussalam).
And we ask Allah to rectify the condition of the Muslims and to protect them from everything that contradicts His Shari'ah. Indeed, He is the All-Hearing, the Responsive.
