Q: What is the ruling on facing or turning one's back to the qiblah inside homes and in the desert when relieving oneself? Knowing that some homes have their bathrooms designed facing the qiblah, please issue a ruling for us, may Allah reward you.
A: It is not permissible to face or turn one's back to the qiblah when relieving oneself of urine or feces if a person is in the desert; because of what is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding the prohibition of that, from the hadith of Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) and others.
As for in houses, there is no harm in that; because of what is established in the two Sahihs, from Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: And success is from Allah.
