The word "Sayyid So-and-So"

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: We frequently hear people address someone as "Sayyid So-and-So" because he traces his lineage to certain families. Is this permissible?
A: If he is known by this, there is no harm; because the word (Sayyid) is applied to the leader of the people, to the jurist, to the scholar, and to one who is from the descendants of Fatimah from the children of al-Hasan and al-Husayn. All of this is a convention known among people.
And the Arabs used to call the leaders of the tribes and the elders "Sayyids," "Sayyid of the sons of So-and-So, So-and-So." And just as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said when some of the Arabs asked:
Who is your Sayyid, O sons of So-and-So? Who is your Sayyid, O sons of So-and-Soمن سيدكم يا بني فلان؟ من سيدكم يا بني فلان
Who is your leader?
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said regarding al-Hasan: "Indeed, this son of mine is a Sayyid, and perhaps Allah will reconcile through him two great groups of the Muslims." And it is disliked to address a person with "O my Sayyid" or "O our Sayyid," because when it was said to the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) that you are our Sayyid, he said:
The lord is Allah, the Blessed and Exaltedالسيد الله تبارك وتعالى
Sunan Abi Dawud 4806Sahih (Al-Albani)
And because this may lead him to arrogance, pride, and self-importance. So it should be left, and one should say: O So-and-So, or O Abu So-and-So, by the names, kunyas, and titles that are known.
As for the expression when addressing him: O my Sayyid, O our Sayyid, leaving this is preferable.
