The ruling on addressing a person with the term: Sayyid So-and-So

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Our brother says: The use of the term "Sayyid So-and-So" is common among us, and this is because he traces his lineage to specific families. Is this permissible?

Answer:
If he is known by that, there is no harm in it, Sayyid So-and-So, Sayyid So-and-So; because the word Sayyid is applied to the leader of the people, to the jurist and the scholar, and to one who is from the descendants of Fatimah from the children of al-Hasan and al-Husayn, he is called Sayyid. All of this is a known convention among people. The Arabs used to call the leaders of the tribes and the elders Sayyids, Sayyid of the sons of So-and-So is So-and-So, and Sayyid of the sons of So-and-So is So-and-So. And just as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said when some of the Arabs asked:
Who is your Sayyid, O sons of So-and-So? Who is your Sayyid, O sons of So-and-So?من سيدكم يا بني فلان؟! من سيدكم يا بني فلان؟
meaning: Who is your leader? And just as he (peace and blessings be upon him) said regarding al-Hasan:
My son here is a Sayyid, and perhaps Allah will reconcile through him two great factionsإن ابني هذا سيد ولعل الله يصلح به بين فئتين عظيمتين
Sunan al-Bayhaqi 15:938
.
What is disliked is addressing a person with "My Sayyid," "O my Sayyid," or "O our Sayyid"; this is disliked. Because when it was said to the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him): "You are our Sayyid," he said:
The lord is Allah, the Blessed and Exaltedالسيد الله تبارك وتعالى
Sunan Abi Dawud 4806Sahih (Al-Albani)
. And because this may bring about arrogance, pride, and self-importance. It should be left, rather one should say: "O Abu So-and-So!" "O So-and-So!" "O Abu So-and-So!" using the names and titles by which he is known. As for the expression when addressing him, "O my Sayyid," "O our Sayyid," leaving this is better. Yes.
