Ruling on Holding a Mushaf with Tafsir Without Ritual Purity
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: The brother who indicated his name as: A questioner from Riyadh, says in his question: Is it permissible to hold a mushaf with tafsir without ritual purity? The meaning is: the mushaf that has a tafsir of the Noble Qur'an on its margins, i.e., it is "Qur'an and tafsir"? We ask your Eminence to inform us.
A: It is permissible to hold books of tafsir without a barrier and without ritual purity; because they are not called a mushaf. As for the mushaf dedicated to the Qur'an only, it is not permissible for one who is not in a state of ritual purity to touch it; due to the saying of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) :[Al-Waqi'ah 56:77] IN A PRESERVED TABLET NO ONE TOUCHES IT EXCEPT THE PURIFIED [Al-Waqi'ah: 77-79] and the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "No one touches the Qur'an except one who is in a state of purity."
The basis for absolute purity in the legal custom is: purity from both minor and major ritual impurity, as the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) understood it. And it is not recorded from any of them -as far as we know- that he touched the mushaf while not in a state of ritual purity. This is the opinion of the majority of the scholars, and it is the correct one. And Allah grants success.
