What is the ruling on the wudu' and prayer of a woman who has applied henna to her head?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: A woman performed wudu' and then applied henna to her head—she hennaed the hair on her head—and then stood up for her prayer. Is her prayer valid or not? And if her wudu' is broken, should she wipe over the henna, or should she wash her hair and then perform the minor wudu' for prayer?

A: Applying henna to the head does not break the state of purity, provided she has finished applying it. There is no harm in wiping over her head, even if there is henna on it or something similar, such as bandages that a woman might need. There is nothing wrong with wiping over it during the minor purification.
As for the major purification: it is necessary to pour water over it three times, and wiping is not sufficient. This is based on what is established in Sahih Muslim, from Umm Salimah (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: "O Messenger of Allah! I tie my hair tightly. Should I undo it for the ghusl of janabah and menstruation?" He said:
No, it is enough for you to throw three handfuls over your head, then pour water over yourself, and you will be purified.لا، إنما يكفيك أن تحثي على رأسك ثلاث حثيات، ثم تفيضين عليه الماء فتطهرين
Mishkat al-Masabih 438
.
And if she undoes it during menstruation and washes it, that is better, due to other hadiths that have been reported regarding this.
And success is from Allah.
