The Ruling on the Ghusl for Friday

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: A. M. Z. from Baljurashi says in his question: Is the ghusl for Friday obligatory, recommended, or a sunnah? And if a person performs ghusl from janabah on the night of Friday, does that suffice for the ghusl of Friday? Knowing that some say that the day begins after midnight, if this ghusl does not suffice, what is the appropriate time for it?

A: The ghusl for Friday is a confirmed sunnah for men; because of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
The taking of a bath on Friday is compulsory for every male Muslim who has attained the age of puberty and (also) the cleaning of his teeth with Siwak, and the using of perfumeغسل يوم الجمعة واجب على كل محتلم وأن يستاك ويتطيب
Sahih al-Bukhari 880
and his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
Whoever goes to Friday, let him perform ghuslمن راح إلى الجمعة فليغتسل
Sahih Ibn Hibban 8:198
in many other hadiths. It is not obligatory in the sense that one who leaves it commits a sin, but it is obligatory in the sense that it is confirmed; because of this authentic hadith, and because of his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
Whoever takes a bath, then comes to al-Jumu'ah prayer, then prays what was fixed for him, then keeps silent till the Imam finishes the Khutbah (religious talk - sermon), and then prays along with him - his sins (committed) between that time and the next Friday will be forgiven, with an addition of three days more.من توضأ يوم الجمعة ثم أتى المسجد فصلى ما قدر له ثم أنصت حتى يفرغ الإمام من خطبته غفر له ما بينه وبين الجمعة الأخرى وفضل ثلاثة أيام
Bulugh al-Maram 2:382
and his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
Whoever performs Wudu on Friday, then he will receive the blessing, and whoever performs Ghusl then Ghusl is more virtuous.من توضأ يوم الجمعة فبها ونعمت ومن اغتسل فالغسل أفضل
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 497Hasan (Darussalam)
.
And by this, it is known that his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
obligatoryواجب
does not mean it is fard (obligatory), but rather it means it is confirmed, just as the Arabs say in their language: "Your right upon me is obligatory," and the meaning is: it is confirmed, combining the hadiths that came regarding this; because the legal rule in combining hadiths is to interpret some of them with others when their wordings differ; because the speech of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) confirms some of it with other parts, and interprets some of it with other parts, and so is the speech of Allah in His great Book, confirming some of it with other parts, and interpreting some of it with other parts. And whoever performs ghusl from janabah on Friday, that suffices him for the ghusl of Friday, and it is better that he intend both of them when performing the ghusl.
And the prescribed ghusl for Friday is not achieved unless it is after the appearance of Fajr.
And it is better that his ghusl be when he sets out for the Friday prayer; because that is more complete in terms of energy and cleanliness.
And success is from Allah.
