The Ruling on Residing with One Who Abandons Prayer
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: A question from: M. A. - He says: I previously stayed in one of the hospitals, and two people entered the room where I was staying, and we spent three days together. During this period, I was praying while they were not, even though they are Muslims from my country. I did not say anything to them. Is there a sin on me for not commanding them to pray? If so, what is its expiation?
A: It was obligatory upon you to advise them and to disapprove of the great evil they committed, which is abandoning prayer; acting in accordance with the saying of Allah, the Exalted: [Al-Imran: 104] and the verses that came with its meaning, and acting in accordance with the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Sahih Muslim 49a narrated by Imam Muslim in his Sahih. Since you did not do that, it is obligatory upon you to make sincere repentance from this disobedience. Its reality is: regretting what you did, ceasing from it, and resolving not to return to the like of it; out of sincerity for Allah, magnifying Him, hoping for His reward, and fearing His punishment. And whoever repents, Allah accepts his repentance; due to His saying (Glorified and Exalted is He) : [Ta-Ha: 82].
A: It was obligatory upon you to advise them and to disapprove of the great evil they committed, which is abandoning prayer; acting in accordance with the saying of Allah, the Exalted:
And let there be [arising] from you a nation inviting to [all that is] good, enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong, and those will be the successful.
He who amongst you sees something abominable should modify it with the help of his hand; and if he has not strength enough to do it, then he should do it with his tongue, and if he has not strength enough to do it, (even) then he should (abhor it) from his heart, and that is the least of faith.
من رأى منكم منكرًا فليغيره بيده، فإن لم يستطع فبلسانه، فإن لم يستطع فبقلبه وذلك أضعف الإيمانBut indeed, I am the Perpetual Forgiver of whoever repents and believes and does righteousness and then continues in guidance.
وَإِنِّي لَغَفَّارٌ لِمَنْ تَابَ وَآمَنَ وَعَمِلَ صَالِحًا ثُمَّ اهْتَدَى
