The ruling on joining the hands after rising from bowing
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: H. M. asks about the ruling on joining the hands after rising from bowing in prayer, and about letting them hang down.
A: It is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he held his hands together while standing in prayer. The state of a person after rising from the bowing is a state of standing, and it is prescribed for him to hold his hands together in it. As for letting the hands hang down in prayer, it is disliked and should not be done, as it is contrary to the Sunnah. It is established in Sahih al-Bukhari from Abu Hazim from Sahl ibn Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) who said:Sahih al-Bukhari 740 Abu Hazim said: And I do not know it except that he traced it back to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). This authentic hadith indicates that what is prescribed in prayer is holding the left hand with the right hand.
It is known from the authentic Sunnah that what is prescribed for the one praying in the state of bowing is to place his hands on his knees, and in the state of prostration to place them opposite his shoulders or his ears, and in the state of sitting to place them on his thighs and knees. So, of the states of prayer, only the state of standing remains. It is known that the Sunnah is to hold the left hand with the right in the state of standing, both before the bowing and after it, because the hadith covers both states. This is supported by what al-Nasa'i narrated with a sound chain from Wa'il ibn Hujr (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: This covers the standing before the bowing and the standing after it. And there is no argument that is good to rely upon, as far as we know, for those who say that the hands should be let down after the bowing. Rather, that is contrary to the explicit Sunnah. The best is to place them on the chest, because Wa'il ibn Hujr and Halib al-Tai narrated that from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with a good chain, and they have corroborating narrations. As for the hadith of 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding placing them below the navel, it is weak according to the scholars of hadith.
And by what we have mentioned, you know that letting the hands hang down does not affect the Islam of the Muslim, nor does it affect the permissibility of eating his slaughtered meat, but it is disliked and contrary to the Sunnah, and should not be done. We ask Allah to guide everyone to understanding in His religion and steadfastness upon it, and to be sincere to Him and His servants. Indeed, He is the best of those asked.
